Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hmm, a few, and a bit of a smear. But I was looking for the Barred Rock that layed it!

I just took some pics, give me a minute to load them up.

Here's the odd ball egg on the right. Can't be anything but a BCM egg, as that's the only breed I have! But what the heck?? The camera did pick up more speckling than my old eyes could see. I might add that the colors represented here are pretty accurate.

I do believe that is a new layer working some things out Debbi. I was just looking for the one I got a few weeks ago that was almost identical to yours, I must have put it in an eating egg carton. Thought I saved it, silly me. Congrats on the new layer I'm thinkin'!

Well, glad to hear that! Now I'll have to go check out the younger girls to see if I can tell who laid this, and give her a stern lecture on proper egg color!

Yes, I like the speckled eggs too! Two of the girls lay those, the other lays the smooth, ruby eggs top left. I hope to improve color, but if this is all I can get, I'm still happy with it. Love finding these eggs!

Don't judge that pullet by the one egg. I've found that a single hen will sometimes lay various colored eggs. I have one hen in isolation that got pecked by the others. She is a nice looking hen and she lays some of my best colored eggs. Once in a while, however, she will lay a lighter colored egg with speckles. Sometimes I think she just doesn't have egg coloring spray jets warmed up for the day.

Oh, by the way, chicken math has been working at Ivywoods. Yesterday I brought home 33 8-month old pullets. 23 white leghorns, 10 rhode island reds, two large feeders, two large waterers, several small feeders and waterers, two bags of layer crumbles, a big plastic trash can to put the feed in and several dozen eggs.

The people that had them had gotten them for their son. Their son moved out and they were tired of taking care of them. So I bought the whole shebang for $200. The pullets are all in really nice condition and are laying like crazy. I'm going to have to find a good source for egg cartons in a hurry!

This is going to be my "workhorse" flock that will hopefully help support my hobby birds.
