You don't want to know how bad I was hoping you would say that! Gosh I love that boy! I needs me some of those....yes I do......YES I DO!!!!!!!!!

No, he didn't hurt them.

Why? Meat project. You'd be surprised what a tall and seemingly skinny bird x a normal bird would make. They actually produce something that looks a lot like a Cornish. Since the tall Oriental Gamefowl have so much muscle tone and a long body to lengthen it out, plus Marans are decently heavy, have moderately good growth speed, and a nice, level set body - The two combined will widen the body, shorten but enlarge the chest muscles, and all together make a good, compact, meaty bird.

Here's a similar cross of Thailand Gamefowl x hatchery Rhode Island Red. Now, Thais are lesser in size and meat than Shamos, and Production Reds much lesser in meat and size than Marans. . . So take this beefcake hen and make her a little chunkier.

I meant to say "seemingly" skinny about Shamos because they actually have a lot more muscle than most other breeds, they only seem skinny because of their hard feathering and tall bodies. (hard feathering is how the feathers press firmly against the body, showing off the true shape of the bird and minimizing the fluff which makes it appear bigger)

Pink - Well said. Shamos are VERY sweet, kind birds, just not to other roosters.

I thought this wasn't going to go into breed standards--just be about us BYC owners who happen to like Marans (among others).

It isn't against the rules to talk about the SOP. . . .

The other thread is to just talk specifically about it. Here we can bounce around and generalize, especially in non-Black Coppers and non-Wheatens.

Hi Naomi!

We talk about all things considered Marans here....from eggs, incubating, hatching, chicks, juvenilles, funny fickle new layers, rowdy roos, injuries, diseases, behaviors and breeding our birds and you don't have to be breeding toward anything, you can breed for just pretty birds and pretty eggs if that is what a person wants to do......WE LOVE ALL MARANS AND MARANS TALK HERE.

I have a question for all regarding the ever loved white tail feather. Anybody game?

As you all know my Gnarles at 1.5 years old has developed 2 white tail feathers....they are not completely white as the shaft of the feather is still blue and one has a weird fading pattern to it(the second photo)......why does it only change part of the feather to white and not the rest? Is there a reason that some turn completely white and others like his only partially white?

This photo is from a couple months ago when he was just finishing up his molt and when I noticed the tail feathers starting to turn white. It's like they turned over night, one day they were all blue and the next they were white. A few weeks before this photo when I was catching everyone and dusting them, I couldn't keep mister slick here in my grasp and he tried slipping away and me I tried grabbing for him and got a hand full of tail, do you suppose this could have happened from that and maybe I injured him in the process? Or is this the dreaded white feather that is here to stay?
