Excess Cockerels~

I used to give them away and would sell only a few that I thought were good enough for breeding if someone wanted them. Free was a very good thing. Then I found an outlet for all of my blue legged birds, then this outlet went under. Then my nephew came along and said that he would purchase any excess cockerels or roosters (he is very into homegrown meats). This started with just a few birds and now we are expanding to a "Cock Pit".. a coop and large fenced area specifically for raising and free ranging 20 roosties 2 times a year. He pays for my time to care for them and he is purchasing all materials and fencing needed for them, he will also be purchasing all of their feed and sundries. This I like very much.....someone else if footing the bill. His breed of choice....Delawares and Shamos (Shamos coming this spring

Ever thought of trading them for someone else who can offer another type of meat? My neighbor comes up about every 3 mos. and wants to trade his pork or beef for a few roosters. Some how or another..LOL..I always manage to come up with a 2 or 3 boys for him. He processes them and then trades me pound for pound.

SHAMOS???????
What on earth do you want Shamos for? Target practice? At least the way that their head sticks up there it will be no trouble to grab them & wring their neck!

Hey, remember me? I'm the guy who needs a good Rooster instead of this Polish that I now have -- which was my ex-wifes' choice of bird -- for all you who like to give me a bad time about my Polish roo! At least it's not a Shamos...geez
Anyway, back to the roos...Pink, if you have one that would make a good "starter Roo" I will give him a good home. I am not intimidated by agressive birds and I have no children around that might be victimized. It would be fun to send an un-suspecting friend out into the chicken yard to "go get that egg" for me while I sit back and watch the show!

Happy dance for your son coming home. Salute!

I don't know if I can find anyone who would want to trade like that. I've got about all the meat I can use. I do butcher most of our meat (except chickens.) My freezers are full.

Pink, that sounds like an EXCELLENT arrangement. You are very fortunate to have someone willing to do all that in exchange for roosters.

I'm thinking I should place another add, and this time add a few hens in the mix. I've really got more layers than I need, and I know people are looking for them in the spring. I bought some that were an "all or none" deal, and I think getting the numbers down a little might be a good idea. I'm getting about 2 dozen eggs a day, and I'm sure that will pick up with warmer weather, and I'm not sure I can keep up with selling that many.

But I didn't really think that you were ever going to tell anyone that you had a Polish Rooster.

Thank you!!! My last hatch was either all blacks or so dark blue I can't tell the difference. So this was a super nice surprise this morning! Is it Saturday?? Or did I miss a day?
