Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I placed an ad on Craigslist today and gave away all my "oddball" chickens. 2 banties, 1 silkie and yes...even my pair of White Crested Black Polish. So now I have only Marans, Wellies, and 2 RIR's (oh yea, and 2 Columbian Wyandottes!)

I posted 4 adds today. One for eggs, one for RIR hens, one for a trio of young BCM's and one for 8 FREE roosters. The guy at work I was going to give the roosters to "disappeared" and no one seems to know if he is coming back. A guy called earlier and wanted all 8 roos. He should have been here a couple of hours ago, but so far no show.

I went out and rounded up all the roosters, and now they are sitting in little cages out there waiting.

When he called I asked him if he was going to butcher them. He hesitated then said no, he was going to keep them as pets. Who keeps 8 roosters for pets? I got the impression he was lying. I don't like being lied to. If he DID show up I was going to have a bottle of Ivermectin sitting there then I was going to tell him that since he was going to keep them as pets I treated them for lice, mites and other pests and wormed them, so he would want to be SURE not to eat them for at least 3 months. I was assuming he probably wouldn't know anything about it. So then if he was upset about me treating them I would have let him know I was not happy about being lied to and that he could just get the heck out of here.

Yes, I agree. Seemed odd to me until I read some of the posts on it, but even then, shouldn't a "show" chicken still be able to function as a chicken?? Unless I had $1,000.00 hens out there, which will never happen, I can't see the need for it. The saying is, "pretty is as pretty does" doesn't seem to fit any more in the animal world. I want pretty, functional, and fertility and for the roos and hens to do their own thing! If they can't do what the good Lord intended them to do, they're outta here!

My two builder boys (boys??? HA!) came by today to tell me they had not forsaken me. As soon as the ground thaws and dries a bit, they are going to start on the new coop!

Turns out it's bigger than I thought, so a 16x20' coop with surrounding runs will soon be in the makings! Now, I've got to sit down and plan how to section off the inside. I want a small section to store feed, a brooder area, a roo area, and a layer area. They hadn't seen my chooks since they built the last coop so wanted to check them out. They were both afraid of the growling Pip roo that met them at the gate to the run!

I went in to find them an egg so they could see the color, and Pip had to show off. After he got whacked good with the cane last week, all I have to do is turn in his direction and point the cane. He backs off really quick. Pip may still get to meet the inside of a stew pot, I hate having to watch my back all the time!

And, oh yes! My Amish neighbors have one old man in their midst that does processing!! Like 2 bucks a bird. So now I can have my mean/cull roos, and eat them too!!

Oh what a relief it is................... I did a Craigslist post yesterday to get rid of all my oddballs too............................A Golden Phoenix hen from last year's hatch & all her children. She didn't have a mate so she has been being covered by my BIG beautiful EE rooster that I think someone referred to as a Duckwing coloring. Very striking children that have though & the 2 oldest pullets are laying now, one a tinted blue egg & the other off white....Go figure........LOL

Oh, you guys! I like polish. My golden laced polish were the grand champion chickens in the whole big state of Kansas one year when I was a kid.

I just don't think they mix well with other breeds.
