I'm jumping in here, not having read all that was posted about AI (

) but I wanted to add that there's a lot of information online about it as well, and a very good YouTube video as well. It's quite easy, but time consuming. And - many breeders are dead against this method of fertilization because truly, you want birds that can & do breed on their own. When you begin AI, often times, the roo gets lazy, and if ever put back in with the hens (the biggest reason you'd do this is if you have to remove your rooster due to him overbreeding or being nasty to the girls...some breeders heed their hens in tip top shape), he will likely not naturally breed any longer. Again, apologies for jumping in without reading it all...just that this subject sort of bothers me personally, and I just had to pop in!

Hey Math ace,

I'm just starting to get ready to head to town for work this afternoon, but will try to get some pics of the spurs in the morning for you. He is about 6 or 6 1/2 months old...i'll have to check my records again, but he is about twice the size of all the pullets his age (so much so I am going to start working on a bantam project on the side). I think his sheer weight amplifies what his spurs do on them. I caught him up and moved him to a holding pen, and put her in a carrier after I cleaned her up and put some salve on it so she can rest quietly. I remember when I was a kid that as the spurs grew on cockerels my dad would file them and round them and as they got a bit older and the spur got harder he would use a small rasp file...and it seemed to work pretty well, I just wasn't expecting to have to deal with it quite yet.

Seriously People?

Food dye in the duct. I don't know about anyone else, but the last place I am putting anything foreign is in around or even nearby the ducts of my Marans. Hello? That is the business end of these birds. I am not messing with the paint job they already do.

If you are that set on knowing which bird lays which egg, put them in a wire dog kennel until they lay. Good practice in the event they get hurt and need to be confined, and by poking, probing and inserting stuff into your birds, one is going to get hurt sooner than later.

For those novices considering AI... consider what happens if you screw up... you leave your bird paralyzed. Think before you start messing around, please.
