I asked a while back for advice on trimming or doing something with the roo's spurs. . . I got a lot advice, BUT really don't want to do anything until I have to.
HOW old is your roo AND could you post a picture of his spurs ? ?
This would help me determine "WHEN" I need to do something about my roo's spurs.
Hey Math ace,
I'm just starting to get ready to head to town for work this afternoon, but will try to get some pics of the spurs in the morning for you. He is about 6 or 6 1/2 months old...i'll have to check my records again, but he is about twice the size of all the pullets his age (so much so I am going to start working on a bantam project on the side). I think his sheer weight amplifies what his spurs do on them. I caught him up and moved him to a holding pen, and put her in a carrier after I cleaned her up and put some salve on it so she can rest quietly. I remember when I was a kid that as the spurs grew on cockerels my dad would file them and round them and as they got a bit older and the spur got harder he would use a small rasp file...and it seemed to work pretty well, I just wasn't expecting to have to deal with it quite yet.
