Unfortunately, TONE is one of those things that gets lost on forums.
For every decision each of us makes - - - we will choose what works best for our unique situations.
Personally, I like to be exposed to MANY ideas and then make my own decisions for my own situation.


I do IGNORE all TONES because I have found that no one takes the time to post unless they really want to help . . .

So MARANS Folks - - let's PLAY NICE

HERE is my MARANS question for the DAY - - -

I currently have a 14 week old delaware roo who has been a charmer from day ONE. He has always stayed with his girls and avoided confrontations with the other young cockerels. He appears to be Alpha or close to it - - - but never gets involved in disputes.

My one year old BCM roo was a charmer from the beginning too. Looked after the ladies and was not obnoxious with the other cockerels.

I had 3 other cockerels in with that 14 week olf delaware - - - they NEVER were interested in the ladies - - They bullied them and fought with each other.

HERE is the question - - -

Do you find that some cockerels are just destined to be excellent roos in attitudes ? ? ?
Do you give these guys preference when culling ? ?

I sure do! My two dark boys are sweethearts. Pip is a real pain in the rear! Funny thing is, the girls won't have anything to do with his nastiness, so that makes me think that's where some of his anger is coming from. Once the new coop is built, I'll put him in with a few girls of his very own, and see if that mellows him down. If it doesn't, he's off to the processor! There is nothing enjoyable about dodging an angry rooster, and I sure don't want to pass that on to the offspring!

Lisa~ Bill could have had a lime green mohawk, nasty Barney the dinosaur purple polka dots and pumpkin orange legs and I still would have kept him.....just because he is a nice boy and always has been. He has never tried anything silly or stupid, he is very gentle with the ladies and he loves chicks, if chicks are out playing in the grassy area for a day, Bill goes crazy nutz at his fence until I open it. Once his gate is open and he is out with them....he calms right down. He cluckles to them and picks stuff up in his beak and drops it for them. He also watches where they go....if they get to far away, he is running across the yard, herding them up. I want every rooster I have to be like Bill, but I think he is one of a kind. Gnarles is kinda like him in the chick respect....Gnarles likes chicks too.
