Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Ok Math ace....here's my culprit. It was hard to get a good photo of the spurs holding the giant and the camera at the same time. The spurs look rather rounded, but once I ran my finger across it, I realized there was a sharper point than I thought. So I filed the point off to a nice round shape and hopefully that will help. All I know is that for 6 months old he's massive. Bigger than some of my year olds already.

man...a before and after would have been good...I can be a ditz sometimes. I took the pic this mornin before i did chores and I had done the filing yesterday so i could turn him loose again. His spur was more pointed before, but not a ton longer...i probably filed off about a 1/16 or 1/8 inch to get it totally round.

I have heard of the Kelvin Jeane lines, but I am not versed enough in the history of them to share any degree of helpful info. I do know that Kelvin is Wade Jeane's brother and they were active together with their birds if I remember correctly and both had birds from the same stock???......this is where I digress and let someone else take over on the facts, I know there are several fabulous peeps that will be on sometime and they will help you out with their opinions and advise, lots of Jeane line bird owners out there, they are lovely birds.

I have all 20 of Kelvin Jeane's original hens which he gave to Jesse Bryant and I bought all of Mr. Jesse's flock.

I don't want to start any arguments so that's all I'll say about "the facts". I do sell hatching eggs and day old chicks.

I got the best Valentines Day present ever - in the history of Valentines Day.

The phone rang last night and when I answered I heard "Mom". It was my son. He had just landed on U.S. soil, home from Iraq. Praise the Lord.

O.K. I promise I won't hijack the thread again but just had to share.

I got rid of all my excess roosters last night. I hope I kept the best ones. I was going to take pictures of each one and post them on here for all of you to critique and give advice, but I just never got it done. I have been paying attention, however, to what everyone says about the ones that have been posted, so I think I probably did all right. I kept 2 so I would have a spare just in case something happened to the one I wanted to keep. I put the extra one in the pen with the leghorns temporarily, so he wouldn't accidently get taken with the others. Those leghorn girls started picking on him and he wanted OUT! They seem to be leaving the big guy alone now so maybe it will be okay till I make different arrangements.

I also sold 10 RIR pullets. I just had too many chickens and decided to keep the leghorns for laying instead of the RIR's. I don't sell most of my maran's eggs. I've had trouble with blood spots in the eggs. It seems to be a little better than it was for a while. They are 11 months old. Maybe as spring approaches and they start laying heavier it might clear up, I hope. I don't want to sell eggs that end up turning people off towards them.
Anyone else have trouble with blood spots in their marans' eggs?

Sorry, wasn't referring to anyone in particular but I know in the past I've had to be very careful about what I say about my birds' origins. They just seem to "breed" trouble. I now call them the "Bethel" line
