Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

From my marans I get very dark chocolate red, lighter spotted or specked ones and sometimes a rough surfaced terra cotta egg. Today I had a rough terra cotta egg that almost had a "purplish" cast to it. Sometimes the same hen will lay dark and then speckled the next time. Go figure. Spray jets must have needed a refill.

LOL...thanks Ivywoods. I appreciate your help.

If you guys don't mind, I have another question.

How and when (meaning at what age) can you tell if a Marans chick is going to be a Hen or a Roo?

I'll join you in the minority. It was a snow day today and I spend some quality time with the birds... those black coppers are Pritty!

I will admit that I am getting some blue/black copper hatching eggs from Nadine this week. But I only did it cuz my neighbor likes all the colorful chickens in her yard. And as long as it keeps her happy, than I will have to have the variety so I don't have to put up a fence. I have great neighbors!

, but I have to agree with you Math Ace and Keara. I'm partial to the Black Copper Marans.

I'm not the best one to ask. I can usually tell when they are a few weeks old by their wattles and comb. However, generally I just don't worry about it until they are old enough that it's pretty obvious. The BCM's take SO LONG to feather out that I'm certainly in no hurry to cull or anything until I've got a pretty good idea of what they will look like.

Edited: I mean, it takes a long time for their copper coloring to come into their feathers. Generally the cockerells will show more coppering before the pullets, too

She could use a little more copper around the neck

I'm going to be nice and not play the "Racial Card" in this game....It just seems that your avatar of a mad, wrinkle-faced, pot-bellied pig does not exemplify who you are...just a thought....or then again.........

Can someone tell me what colors cuckoo marans come in? I have seen the black and white and a golden is this it or is there more?

there is also blue cuckoo...but they are not all that common...i have two that are about 4 days old that are from a silver (or black and white) cuckoo over a blue pullet. I'm excited to see how they will color out...they are a really nice color of blue right now and hope it really pops against the white in the cuckoo pattern
