Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I've done three hatches since Nov 2010. Fourth one is in the incubator now.
I do not watch during lockdown anymore.
I KNOW I am not allowed to open the incubator, so what is the point?

I check them a few times a day. . . After all I was the auto-turner for the previous 18 days.
I have the routine of going to the incubator three times a day to turn the eggs.
Now, I go to the incubator three times a day during lock down to check for pips.
THEN I LEAVE the room.

Last hatch, I had the first chick out of the shell and I went to bed saying
"I hope there is more in the morning!".

GOOD LUCK to all thos who are hatching !

Well Girlfriend then you have waaaaaaayyyyy more patience than I and I have been hatching a while now, I still check on the eggs constantly when I am here and when I can. Once in lockdown I make several more trips a day to it the 'bator just to see what's going on.

Sometimes, I will even pull up a sleeping bag and camp on my office floor during hatches. Just gotta be there if at all possible to watch their progress.

I'm in lockdown with Mel's eggs right now, hatch day is suppose to be Tuesday. I can imagine that some of these babies will make me wait just as they have done with Poularde and are doing with Debbi as we speak. Now this is where I have patience....waiting on the eggs that take forever to hatch, especially when some of them can make you wait until day 27.

Well, seems I can't do the all-nighters like I used to! Fell asleep around 2am, and woke at 5, ah eh, 6am new time. When I turned the light on, the peeps started. Still only one had hatched, but soon after the light came on, the second blue fuzzy hatched!! One other is zipping right along now too. Two others are starting to zip!

The one 3/4 of the way zipped is the one that pipped the wrong end, I was worried about that one, but she is strong! Finally got to read that egg, it's a Bill blue daughter x Bill! Can't make out her name though, but she pipped below all the writing at the pointy end! Probably a boy...

I think I would've had to find a Polish egg and thrown it in the clutch just for giggles!

The one that says Bill's Blue dtr x Bill is one of Bill's big blue dtr's (she doesn't have a real name, but I call her Sis) that doesn't show any copper in the hackle and she is very dark blue, she is also the one that has feathered shanks. His other blue dtr that is in with Gnarles doesn't have feathered shanks, not sure if I sent you any of her eggs or not because her egg color was a little off at that time, but I can't remember for sure.
SOOOOOOO GLAD you are going to have a Bill baby!!!!!!!!!!!!

I only have a couple of girls that are heavily feathered like street sweepers, all of them except for Bill and one of Bill's dtr's have feathered shanks. Most of them have nice feather shanks to sparsely feathered shanks. One of the street sweepers lays a pretty light egg and you did not get any of her eggs. The other sweeper lays a nice egg and you did get some of hers.

Good deal. Roy and Clyde have the market on the "street sweeper thing" around here! Then there is Blue Butt, forgot about him! He's got nice shank/toe feathering too. Now he is finally starting to get some saddle and wing color in. He has a nice copper colored hackles, hope it spreads! Pip, Fugs, and Bump will be taken out of the gene pool soon.

Debbi~

You asked me for a photo of Chloe. This is the most recent photo of her that I have. This was taken just a few days ago.

I will see if I can get a photo of her hackles a little closer for you, she has a good amount of copper. No her comb is not funky, but it is flopped over because she is in full production.
eta: Chloe is one of Gnarles' first kiddos, she is only about 7 months younger than Gnarles, she just turned 1 year old in January. As soon as that boy started doing his thing... I was incubating eggs.
