Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thanks, I had hoped the MO folks would have more shows, but I guess not. I remember going to the Sedalia Fair years ago, like 15 years ago? It was a big fair, and hotter than blazes! People were passing out left and right. Me and a friend went to the beef cattle/dairy barns, and they were all under misters. HA! Guess where we stayed for a long time??

how is your humidity sitting?

Humidity is at 76% and temp is now at 98 degrees. Should I just step away from the bator and try to get some sleep. These chicks have me as worried as a first time mommy.

I haven't hatched anything since last April, but for some reason it feels like an eternity.

Check your ambient room temperature. Also, staring at the bator helps to adjust the temps (JUST KIDDING!!)

I do hover over mine like a mother hen to watch for temp and humidity changes, and adjust accordingly though. If your room temps change, so will the bator temps change. Better for them to go lower in temp than higher! At lower temps, it will just slow down the hatching process; higher temps (above 102 for more than 1/2 hour) will fry the chicks!

Ha, I think staring at it does work.

I've been staring at it running back and forth from bator to laptop to see if anyone answered me. Well now it's at 99 degrees.

I'm not too happy about it slowing down the process thouhg. Still only have 5 chicks and 2 (maybe three, one we can't tell) that have pipped. I'm so ready for them to hatch out. Every once in a while the eggs will rock, but then nothing.

Anyways, DH wants me to relax and watch a movie with him. Going to lay down and try not to look at the bator which is in my bedroom. I'll probably come back on when movie is over. Hopefully I'll have good news.

gilavina I just saw you emailed me, but have not had a chance to read it. Hopefully after the movie is finished DH will fall asleep and I can come back on here. Right now he is feeling neglected. We have 5 kids (ages 18, 14, 6, 2, and newborn) and to be honest ever since the newborn came into our lives I have been neglecting him. He told me going to Home Depot to buy the things for the coop felt like a date since it's been so long that we actually spent time alone. Kinda sad right?

Yeah...I thought the same, that there would have been more in MO...but there might be more out there that are closer to your area that I don't know about too...if i ever hear of anything else...I'll let you know!
That sounds like a good place to stay on a steamy day like that....I don't like temps that are too high...I'm a mid temps girl....like 50 to 75 type temps...haha I blame it on the Irish/scottish blood in me haha

Haha...I gotta agree with Debbi...some of it too is when humidity goes up it can affect the temps a bit....I wouldn't mess with the incubator, but if you are worried about it, you can adjust the temp in your room like she said...I personally just let the fluctuations go within reason..a couple degrees like that in the hatch doesn't get to me too much since the humidity goes up and down as well when the chicks are hatching and drying off. Now if it starts spiking or dips much lower I'd start thinking about doing something...

Haha...no worries...it sounds like you really have your hands full eh? A movie sounds like a good way for you to spend time with him and to give yourself a chance to relax!

Awww! Men can be so fragile, and I know that from experience. Back in my day it was babies and show dogs. He was a long distance trucker gone for 3 or more months at a time, so when he came home, all things should've have dropped for him. Well, it didn't work that way. Your hubby sounds different, so enjoy the movie, and try to get him "into" the chicks that give you so much joy. It's a simple concept: "if mama ain't happy, ain't NOBODY happy". Sounds selfish at first, but it is soooo true! A happy mom and wife, is a better mom & wife!

If he can even pretend to be into the chooks with you, he will see how much better his life gets!

Maybe a little wine and cheese set-up to watch the bator after the movie?? How romantic is that??

I SOOOO want the Bill x Splash egg to hatch!! That was the one I had to tape up. Surely, if it was a roo, he would be AWESOME!! Keep your fingers crossed for me, I'll be up most of this night!

That said, don't forget to set your clocks ahead an hour tonight folks!

I still think its awesome that people tape their cracked eggs and get them to develop. I never would have guessed! I will definitely keep my fingers crossed!

Sat nights are 'my night'....which usually means I stay up super late and do whatever I want. I've got some researchin to do and a couple paintings i've been putting on hold I might play around with. So, if ya need some conversation, I'll be around
