Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Well, as you all know, these chickens are very entertaining with their antics, AND their eggs! I love finding a new surprise every day. This odd egg is from a new BCM layer, probably her third egg now. Paint jets are starting to gear up, but are still in the cold stage. To answer Lisa's one question of the egg colors; mine all started with a #4 color, then darken to about a #6. For the older three pullets that have been laying for the last 4 1/2 months, the egg color has remained the same, even now while they are molting. The egg on the left was laid by a 6 month pullet, the funny egg was laid by her sister who just started (slacker! ), and the one on the right was laid by one of the older pullets at 9 1/2 months of age. Hope this egg gets as dark as the spots, that would be awesome!!! Oh..did I mention? It's a HUGE honking egg too!

Well I got some eggs in the mail today that I am hoping to get at least one cockerel from and wouldn't mind hatching more.

I got eggs from Keara today - - - Sweet eggs and they were shipped in a foam insulation box. NOW take that Mr USPS football player wanna be!

Here are some picture of my Splash Copper I didn't weight him when I took these as for some reason he wasn't liking me and the camera and then he didn't want to be caught and I saw no reason to get the net out because later when I didn't have the camera he was my bud again trying to trip me....

Poor guy I just call him the "Splash" rooster he hasn't had a chance to get a good name..I've been waiting for him to grow up hatched in late July he has 3 girls soon from a Blue Copper hatch that I only got blacks without much copper and it looks like I have 2 pullets that just started to lay that might work well with him too...we've been flooded so since he is "precious" and I wasn't naming him that he's in the bachelor stall I almost have his tractor finished he'll have lots of green stuff to eat and women soon.....this is my only nice BC cock..out of many

OMG!!!! Near tragedy at Mountain Mels' brooder box!

Sometime in the night last night the heat lamp in my brooder box burned out!

Yes, this is where those last 7 babies that I got from Pinkchick were....the little birdies were all huddled up in the corner like one single black ball of fuzz. So I robbed the heat lamp from the 4 birds that I got from her 3 weeks ago and put it in the brooder box. Those must be tough little chickies, because everyone seems to be happy now

(except the 4 that lost their light...I'l get them another before this evening.

Hi I like the white ones too. They seem to be one of the harder/more unusual to find colors in Marans that's why no one posts any photos of them I guess.

Harmony Oaks in Ca has them and I think Karen is hatching some for herself and I have one hen from Cuckoos that I hatched..she's smaller and even though she hatched out of a 7 egg she barely lays a 4. I think she's pretty but I don't know what to do with her maybe cross her with OE's I know her eggs so she just hangs out with the other BC's.
