Young roosters are like teenage boys - - - full of it!

I have found two things to help settle them down . . . . .

1.) AGE - - Yes, maturity is a great thing with roosters too!

2.) WOMEN - - Yes, those youthful boys need something to keep them busy, very busy.

The roosters KNOW if the girls are pullets or hens. They will not waste their time with a female who is not mature yet.
The pullets start squawting right before they start laying.

I have a rooster in quarantine right now. He crows his head off EVERY TIME he sees me. WHINE, WHINE, WHINE, . . . oh men are men

He rarely crowed when he was allowed to free range and do his own thing. He is older and normally less driven to establish his manhood.
I have a cockerel who was named THUNDER because he is obnoxious about his crowing. He calls every hen over he can. It is the only time he shuts up! He gets all sweet and starts all the lovey dovey sweet talk to the ladies. I have gotten where I throw scratch just outside his cage so that the girls will hang out close to him and he will shut up for a while!

He NEEDS some girls, but I don't have him set up for permanent ladies yet!

AND I keep hatching cockerels!

Those two trouble making roos go back and forth all day starting around 5:00 in the morning.

I have two other roos on the property. One old and one young. BOTH have their own women. I hear the one between 5 - 7 in the morning. Nothing else for the rest of the day unless he sees something wierd. He has way too many women to waste his energies crowing.

The other sweet roo - - - I NEVER HAVE HEARD HIM CROW!

He does WHINE over scratch though

You will need to be MORE SPECIFIC before anyone can help you . . . The different color marans have different proposed standards. Some colors don't even have proposed AMERICAN standards yet. . .

Black Copper,
Blue Copper,
Cuckoo,
Black,
Blue,
White,
Wheaton,
etc.

Which marans are your referring to?

Thanks - that's what I suspected. I do wish I could keep him since I'm not interested in breeding - he's awfully pretty. But I'm not zoned for him. Guess I'll try CL next. Anyway thanks for the advice!

I bought some Maran eggs online. They were supposed to be of Wade Jean and Cottage Hill lines. Only 2 of 11 eggs hatched. One of my chicks had a lot of white on her face, chest and legs. The chick is now 4 weeks old and has white feathers on her feet. I also bought some eggs from a local breeder that are from the Bev Davis line. 7 out of 12 eggs hatched. The local breeder does not think that my whiter chick is pure Maran. He says he has never seen white leg feathers on his birds.
Does this chick look pure Maran? Her comb does seem more yellow and not very pronounced, yet she has almost no tail and is very big.
Thanks! I did my best at taking the pictures!

Is there even such a thing as a Rooster who crows 2 or 3 times at the crack of dawn, then quiets down and goes on about his business ? Or am I living in a fantasy world?

Definately a fantasy world.

My roosters don't know how to tell time Mel so they crow whenever they get the hankerin'.

Bill is the first to start out between 230AM and 330AM.......then the rest chime in and it's a crow fest 'til the sun goes down.

haha....am tired of it all too....we had a patch of about three or four days about a week or so ago where the weather was just fabulous...I was outside working and getting tons done, but then we got hit with the same...the cold, wet, muddy, mucky crap. I am usually a pretty even keel person, but man...it was like a blow to my spirits....

and yes!!! it totally counts

whatcha got hatching now?

I've got some I hatched out on sunday....40 pretty happy healthy little boogers...I had my first batch of sussex, in the marans black coppers, blues, cuckoos, and my first dorkings! They are adorable! I have my next hatch coming up on friday I think...more Marans, Sussex, and I added in a batch of bantam Wyandotte eggs to hatch out for my dad since I had some space. I still get so excited everytime

People
in the western half of the country, check out the above link during Pacific Time daylight hours only. (ya can't see it during nighttime!)

It is a real cool satellite link-up that I found. Notice the neverending stream of rain clouds that are headed for the Pacific Northwest, then on into the Central states....

Pinkchick, you better not look, it'll just make ya' cry!

MARANS, MARANS, MARANS....GOTTA LOVE EM !!!!! I'm working on a strain, based on some of Pinkchicks Blues, that I'm hoping will have webbed feet. I should have the genetics perfected by the time summer gets here. It's looking like the prominent gene will be MM (Mallard Mutation) and my biggest challange will be breeding to get the green out of the head.
