Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

hey kim, just a quick question for you...I think I had asked a couple weeks back but I think it got lost in the shuffle...how do you hobble your chicks when they have a leg that is not acting proper. What do you use, how long do you leave it? all that stuff. Ocassionally I will get one, but never had much luck correcting it

Flgardengirl, I'm not sure what might be up with your chicker...have you tried any supplements or anything like electrolytes? maybe its lacking something? hopefully someone will be able to tell you what might be happening.

OK hate to ask and promise to write it down this time but can someone please give me the colors from BBS matings please
ie.. black X black=black and so on Thanks

Sorry for the confusion of terms, but yes, the blue does dilute black to blue in one dose, but there are some splash where the black is inhibited to a large degree, so I think it is semantics. It inhibits the expression of black to varying degrees, since there is no "white" pigment really, to dilute the black.

Yes, a hen is either silver or gold, so a gold S/s+ roo mated to a silver hen will produce silver and gold hens, and silver or S/s+ roosters.

I should clarify that these terms only work in the Copper Marans world. Black Coppers are "gold" s+/s+ with Mahogany genes to make them "red birchen". Silver birchens are S/S. It is possible that some incorrect s+/s+ birchen marans without the mahogany gene that are technically gold birchen and will breed true. These are probably the straw hackle birds we see from time to time.

GOOD EGGS / GOOD STOCK does NOT have to cost a fortune. . . Don't be led by the price tag.

I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you

1.) Watch what people are posting pics of on here and the feedback they receive ( GO BACK AND LOOK AT PREVIOUS PICTURES AND FEEDBACK)

2.) Ask others what they think about so and so's stock.

3.) Be prepared to WAIT.. . some of these ladies have a few month waiting list.

4.) Another source of folks that are not on BYC is people who are showing marans - - - ( ie Newnan, Ga show)
Look for shows that had a LOT of entries in the marans division. Being in the top 5 when there are only 10 entries does not really tell you much.
However, being in the top 5 when there are 40 marans entries does give you a better indicator.

5.) ASK PEOPLE who bought their eggs a year ago what they thought about them. I did this on some ebay sellers. If I was worried about particular faults showing up in the line . . . I asked if they saw it in their birds.

GOOD does not mean EXPENSIVE! There are many of us who have paid top dollar for JUNK . . . MANY Many many of us . . . We all learn that lesson!

Thanks for the tips. It can be a bit discouraging at times but Im not giving up we love our chickens to much for that. I will keep reading and viewing and learning.

Hi everyone , Thought I would update my last post about getting some Marans . The lady was nice and helped me pick out 13 Marans and my husband picked for himself a black/white mottled Cochin . She had a pen of blue , black and splash Marans , another pen of Cuckoo Marans . This pic is not the best as they want nothing to do with me . The babies are about 18 days old now . I love the colors !
