It didn't look like our government is going to care 2 cents about BYC people unless it threatens the big industrial chicken hatcheries. . . SAD

I always border my garden with them all the way around. It looks great and seems to pull all the buggies, also seems to keep the rabbits at bay too. bonus

They have to be planted right next to the tomatoes. . . I use to do this until I figured out that other pests like marigolds. So, by planting the marigolds I was inviting white flies ( I think) to dinner . . . I pulled those marigolds up and never planted them near the garden again.

I use plastic and the SUMMER suns heat to bake nematodes. . . If you decide to let your garden REST for a couple of months this summer. . . .this method will knock down the nematode population.

In the meantime, PLANT NEMATODE RESISTANT tomato varieties AND use lots and lots of organic material in the garden. Nematodes are not found of organic material.

So, they are using the fowl pox vaccine to grow a vaccine for the AI virus ? ? ?

It looks like they inserted the AI virus antigen/protien into the less virulent fowl pox virus and initiate an immune response against the AI virus.

Ohh maybe not use the marigolds then. I am still gonna plant some away from the garden. I read somewhere that feeding hens marigold petals would make your egg yolks more orange. I just wanna try it lol.

I am gonna put my maters in pots/buckets this year and see how it goes. I am getting 5 gal. buckets and probably trellis them with some stakes and cattle panels. I guess that will leave me more room for other stuff to plant in the ground.
Do you guys grow small pumpkin, melons, cucumbers or gourds up the sides of your chicken runs? I am thinking of putting some lattice at an angle outside the runs and then grow them up the sides and over the top. I am not sure how I would spray them if I get pests (mainly those horrid stinkbugs that took over everything last year). I can use NEEM for awhile until the temps gets really high. I really hate to spray anything at all around the chickens.

if i were to try and grow any veggies near my chickens...they'd destroy them....I wouldn't even have a chance to start worrying about the squash bugs that come in droves...and drive me insane. I'm still coming up with some methods to keep them under control...arggggg!

That's why I am going to put them in pots and grow them up a trellis/lattice that is at an angle so they can't reach the vines. Haha I'm hoping to grow the fruits hanging down through the wire at the top of the runs so they can see them but can't reach them. Once they are ripe I will give them to them but they have to wait otherwise lol. It will be an experiment.

Oh, ok that makes more sense, I didn't catch that before, you'll have to let me know how it goes! Maybe that will give me time too to figure out how I can do some sort of variation of something similar...never know...I love experimenting on things like that!
