Don, Math and Pink....

I am going to toss my 2 cents in and say, you are both correct. I think that if you have established a Black Copper line that breeds true to a certain body type, than adding Black Coppers from a second line (...be it a BBS line or a pure BC line.....) adds new genetics that could affect body type.

I agree with you about adding birds from this line or that line...it's the overall bird and genetics or history of genetics of the bird or their line that carries forward and this is where the body issues can come in.....my whole point is that any bird any color can have issues that it brings with it to the program...but I sincerely do not believe that the color Blue or Splash itself causes issues with body type.

You know I was looking in my wallet today and saw I still had your address inside, from shipping you those eggs. I wondered why I had not yet thrown it away, and now I know. Let me know when you are ready and I will send you some more.

There is so much that is unknown when it comes to the genetics for Marans. I use what has worked for me with other breeds over the years. It is common for the blue Copper to have varying amounts of copper in the hackle just like the Black Copper female. Using the Blue Splash male from the matings will give you a Blue in the medium Blue. My experience is that the medium blue colored female will do better in the showroom. Don

Thanks Village! I was baffled by the color combination. Is this typical or atypical? Anything worth preserving or attempting to work from? I don't particularly like the head AT ALL, its downright ugly but its a substantial body, looks correct in back length, tail set and I can take some pics from the front but its pretty broad fronted as well. Feathered shanks, outside toe, none on other toes. I am thinking if he's of little or no value, he will be the plate, not mate, type

So for these colors to come about in the first place, what combined with what combined with what gave this conglomeration? (sorry if you answered that question, I just can't get it straight in my brain)

I went into my coop today and picked up a hen that was setting (fingers crossed she may be broody? HAHA) and she has NO copper at all in her hackles or anywhere on her body, lightly feathered shank, outer toe only and appears all black. Would she be considered a black Marans and what happens when bred to a copper hackled BCM roo? Or should she be separated out and utilized to develop a black line?

So sorry for your poor hatches. I really do feel for you. I get so bummed trying to get better stock & buying eggs & having poor hatch rates even though I hatch my own with good success. I had high hopes that my new "great" incubator would be the answer for me but alas............I have had mixed results at best. I have been wondering if I should seek out breeders that send chicks & go from there til I get some "good" stock of my own. I am going to the Stevensen Washington show this week end maybe I can find something or someone there. What a bummer.............

I rarely post here. But I would recomend coming over to the washingtonians thread, and asking if anyone has what your looking for. You might be able to pick up eggs or chicks at the Stevenson show this weekend if you are still going.

Here are the Birchen babies I lost one black one and the other black one is wearing hobbles how long should I leave them on they do not like them at all....
