He had some red and golden potatoes that started sprouting on them, so he cut them up so each piece had an eye and put them in little yougart cups to start them. One plant is up about 4-5 inches.

How long should we leave the splint on the chicks legs or should we plan on changing them again?

how long have you had those splints on? When I talked to kim about the way she showed both us with that vet wrap she said she has left them on as long a week. I left some on for two or three days and took them off to see and the chicks did fantastic after that with out them. One I left for a whole week...it was a much bigger chick, so I wonder if the weight of the chick had anything to do with how long it needs to be left? I guess if it was me, I'd take the wrap off...and let the chick wander around a bit if its been a few days and see how it does. if its lookin still kinda iffy...then I'd reapply a new wrap and let it go for another couple of days.

the splint has been on since Friday, maybe we'll take it off and see how the chick does we can always put a new one on! thanks

I also have some ducks that are pipped to but there hatch is tommorow also. I guess I have hatched so many of them over the last few months they are not as exciting anymore.

IVYWOODS,

We did some more work on coop #1 this afternoon. We would of got further, but the neighbors came over to check out the work in progress.
We have THREE of these to complete, so you and Dh have plenty of time to catch up.

This is how far we got today.

We did not finish framing it in today

Still need to frame in the nesting boxes.

I am hoping to get the nesting boxes and wire flooring taken care of during the week AND . . ... Then next weekend will be siding time.

Each coop will be 5 x 8 and will attach to the metal pens in the background.

Harris 5,

Oh how heart breaking! Sorry for your loss

. Dogs or any other predator don't get 5 strikes here! One strike...yer OUT! I'm afraid I would not have been as nice as you towards the MIL either; "just chickens"....

I think I'd send her a bill and tell her, "it's just money".

I am keeping one of my Black Maran roo's. They are 9 weeks old and a very mature 9 weeks old. I saw the bigger one already trying to woo the same age pullets with his wing dance OY.

#1 This one is quite a bit larger has the very black eye color, he does have a few white feathers in his wings and on his chest (but they may be going away)

This is the smaller of the two, less "mature" and has light eye color. He just doesnt look quite as nice and ballanced as the larger one.

Ok these ARE hatchery birds from Estes hatchery. I am not a breeder and I prefer smooth legs, I just want to keep a rooster. I am leaning toward the larger one but just wanted to make sure about the eye color.

Eye color should be an orangey color, (reddish bay as the SOP says). The eyes will change colors up to around 4 months or so. You do not want a dark or pearl colored eye. They change so much in appearance, 9 weeks really isn't a good time to choose. If I were you, I'd give them at least a couple more months.

Also, it's hard to tell anything about their conformation with them being held. Try to get some pics of them standing naturally (
