Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I'm sorry to be entering this thread in the middle of a conversation, but I have a question. I hatched my first group of Marans about 4 weeks ago, and ended up with 3 Black coppers (2 pullets, 1 roo) and 3 blue coppers out of 8 eggs (2 pullets and 1 roo).. I know.. crazy good luck! 2 of the blacks are feather shanked, the blues are clean. But this is where it gets weird: the blue copper cockerel has NO TAIL. He looks ridiculous! Everyone else has nice fluffy tails coming in, this guy doesn't even have a wisp of feathers starting. I'm baffled... these are Krebs line marans. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? Maybe the Araucana roo got into the marans pen?

I will compare them when the other wheaton eggs hatch there are two of them that are getting close to hatching. Do BCM chicks normally have some dark copper down on them? I dont remember seeing any chicks that do on here. Was just curoise because one or 2 of them do that have hatched so far for me. I had only planned on keeping some of the weatons, bcm, and some blues just because I saw the parents and out of the eggs I got I new I would probably not be as happy with the others.

I've yet to hatch one with the copper on them, but Don and someone else posted pics of a couple of chicks born that way. Mossy maybe??

If you have blues in the mix, the white chick may be a splash??

Yeah the blues are in a seperate hatching try and the egg color for them are not as dark. So pretty positive not a splash. But who knows. Now that you metioned it I think I have seen a few posted like that. I'll talk to the breeder also when they hatch he emailed the other day asking how it was going and if I was ready for more he wants to trade some of my ducklings for his eggs. Told him I wanted to wait until these hatched first so far glad I did.
