Kim, There were some of the first chicks that were like this one also. Village chicken was asking about these relating to the white down and the dark adults, I have marked these and will see what happens when they grow out. I am also keeping an eye on the Brown chick from the first hatch. This hatch had none of the brown tone chicks even though they were from the same males and females. If anyone is interested I have a Jeane male from a different source over some of these same females and the chicks are almost all black with very little white. This male is very well colored and has very light legs. It will be interesting to see these feather out. Don

I vaccinate for LT, Pox, Newcastle-Bronchitis and am debating about the Cocci vaccine now that they have made changes to that. Don

Do you have an opinion about where to buy these vaccines?

Seems someone in here, months ago, posted a pic of a rumpless bird. He may just be a slow featherer too? Can you feel the tail where the feathers should be? Congrats on more pullets than roos too!

There's nothing there! Not a nubbin of a tail or anything.. He's very well feathered everywhere else.. just no tail! I guess the next few weeks will tell if he'll get one or not.. maybe after the first moult but he probably won't be staying.. not to sure if I want to breed a rumpless blue copper!

Don and Pink Got a question for you. I won't enter the debate about breeding balcks and blues as I had no choice. I only had a lovely blue copper roo to place over my black hens. I can hatch 50 wellie roos, but no BC or Branie roos. I bred the Bl copper to the B coppers. I now used the best Black son back on the mom/sisters. I used the best Blue son back over the blue and black Daughters(his sister/half sisters). I lost the original blue roo. I have hatched sevral BC roo from eggs I have bought, but as they mature are all to black. I may test mate some to a gruop of hens that lots of copper hackle and lay lighter eggs, but I wont use them in this line as I don't want to risk lossing egg color. My origianal blue roo was great color Pumkin orange eyes . The whole 10 percent copper flecking in the breast and BIG. He was a davis line bird. My BC hens have lighly color hackles to overly balck. 2 have black eyes. Anyway The daughters from this original cross have correct eye colore, the blues have great copper hackles some of the black have more copper than thier mome, but aleast they all have copper hackle and all have feather shanks. They are leaying eggs as dark as thier mom, I will post some when I get time.I picked up an eggs from the blue copper pullet, as I watched her nest and waited for her to leave. They have been in lay about 6 week and she is laying about as dark as some of Marcellse(sp) eggs. I will hacth some of them next week for my next gen. Anyway the question. When do you cull, As the chicks are born, I have a few(very few) that will carry a few feather on the middle toe. As this is a fault and I will not add them to my flock, do you cull early for this. I have sold some, but really don't wish to propegate flawed birds. I have enclosed a pick of some of my BC from the BC back over his mom and her sisters. I do have the capability to hatch plenty 200 or 300 and cull to what I think the standard is. I really feel that as breeders it is the repsonsible thing to try to breed to current standard. It may not be perfect, but even if faulted birds are sent to back yard layers, they seem to make it to someone breeding pool. So do you cull chicks like that, or sell them to other hobbyist?
Here is a pict of the blue gen 2 roo over his sister 1/2 sisters

I will try to take a pic of some pullet eggs. some are laying this dark maybea bit darker

Hi, My concern was just with putting the Blue and Black copper from the cross back into the pure Black copper. The black copper from crossing the two varieties will work great with the Blue copper breeding. I would cull the chicks with fuzz on the middle toe. Don

The cheapest and best place to buy everything except the LT is Jeffers livestock. I buy the LT from first state. I normally have Pete bring it to a show I am attending. Don

No snow here. Just cold, drizzly-wet. About the time I think spring is here to stay the weather makes a liar out of me. We have all the signs of spring, now if the nice weather would stick around for a while maybe I could get a little more done.

Hubby's goats had some more babies.
Barn cat had 6 kittens.
I'm ready to go turkey hunting and morel mushroom hunting.
I've got several eggs in lockdown. One hatched, one pipped. (Golden Lakenvelders) I hope some more hatch. I've not had very good luck with this incubator. I hope I can get a nicer one sometime this coming year. It doesn't have to be big, just DEPENDABLE!
