Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Debbi - the aprons are great!! Very cute!

Anyone have a pattern for those?

OR

Does anyone have a little pattern for the younger crowd?

My one grow out pen has almost 9 weekers.
They are picking the lower, more submissive (mostly gals) on their backs. My 6 EE have bare patches on their backs (youngest in the bunch), a couple other girls, and my Tank, a BCM cockeral.
I painted them with Blue Cote yesterday - we'll see if that helps....

They have plenty of space, perches, and things to do (I throw all sorts of things in there to eat or play with)

As for turnout (do chickens get "turnout"?), they haven't been out b/c a "Chicken Hawk" family has moved in - 2 adults and a partially fledged baby....
They must be wanting to teach baby how to hunt with my juvenile chickens....sigh....
Working on a big yard for them.

As for breed - I have a mix in there...
11 Red star boys, 25 "ornamental layers" - SLW, SSHamburg, turken, 2 tiny red girls, 4 white leghorns, a silkie
EE, BCM, BlCM.

It seems to be the Red Star boys and, maybe, the white leghorn girls?
The boys will go to the eating pen this weekend...as well as a bunch of my BCM/BlCM culls...
Hopefully, that will help!

Cadeau,

I bought mine from "lovemychix" in the Everything Else for sale section here on BYC. For 3 bucks a pop, it saved me the time and hassle of making my own. Some of the girls were so bald, they were getting sunburned! I noticed this morning that "the boys" are NOT having any more problems with showing the love! Aprons be darned, let the lovin' commence!

Thanks Debbi!
I'll go look!

I have BCM and BlCM the same age and they do the same thing, particularly the boys (looking like 8 boys, 4 girls...sigh)
they have "sides" of the feeder, too!

These guys are so funny. The very dark one, Olivia, is the Switzerland of the bunch. She stays neutral all the time. Billie, the other BCM, is the scat disturber of the bunch, but the only one she fights with are the blues, mostly JR, the cockerel. I could just watch these little idiots for hours!

....and do!

Got any patterns for Roo-Hoods?? I'm not kidding, I thought of that after this past winter when they all got frostbite! Luckily, no one lost any points, but there was some scarring. Vaseline didn't seem to do the trick here with all the minus temps we had. I can see me now trying to put those on! I'm quite sure the boys wouldn't be too darne impressed with that idea!
