Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Do the white earlobes still appear in the Marans stock that has the Pene blood? I just looked them up because I wasn't familar with them and the seem to have white earlobes. That must be one of the breeds that lay brown eggs and has white earlobes?

I've seen some on the internet that have white or pale spots in the ear lobes, but have not yet seen an all white lobe in an adult Marans. I have noticed that some lines tend to color the lobes in faster than others, with the ear lobes staying whiteish/pinkish, long after the comb and wattles have turned red. Does that hint at Penne too??

I was told by a couple of folks not to look for spilt wing until they are older for just that reason -- - feathers falling out and growing in. . . .
I believe I was told to wait until they were 5 months or older before making this culling call.

OBTW, I thought my delaware cockerel had it and sure enough after the Juvie molt. . .. everything was just fine and dandy - - as normal as could be!

Ok, thanks for that Don. Is it possible then, to have a sprig but not pass it on? If there have to be two sets of dominant genes, would it only express itself (sprig/s) when mated to something that also had that pair of genes? I can see where it would lead to doubling up on the undesirable genes down the road when breeding back to a parent or sibling, but if you stayed clear of that type of mating, could you eventually breed it out entirely? Sounded good in my head, hope the idea came through in type!

ADDED: Also, do side sprigs tend to show up with any other specific faults? Like for example, sprigs and white feathers, or sprigs and different color varities? In otherwords, are the sprigs linked to anything else that you have found?

Debbi, If a person wants by single mating all your fowl you can eliminate sprigs from your flock. Eliminate the reactor fowl. Conceivably you could breed a male with sprigs over proven hens that didn't have the sprig gene and not get any sprigs

Lisa, if the young really have a split, weak, or twisted wing they will never change. We need a few pictures of actual split, weak, and twisted to go by. I have only ever had one marans with split wing. I had Brahma bantams that over the last 30 year had all of them.

1.) How young have you seen the split wing ?

2.) I heard that this is an issue more for some breeds than others. . .. . AND it is not NORMALLY an issue for marans.
Do you know which breeds are more prone to it and WHY they are prone to it ? ? ?

How many breeds do you keep Don? That sounds like a really impressive operation you've got over there. I'd love to see your set up. Too bad I'm in Oregon and not Michigan.

Hi, Over the past three months have sold off or give away everything but the Marans. I have a lot of empty cages and pens now.

I am going to try to slide 1 dozen 1 week old chicks under a broody hen tonight. She has been broody for almost 2 weeks now.

ANY ADVICE ? ??

Can I give her the full dozen or will that be to many?
Can I give them to her all at one time ?

How late at night do I have to wait to give them to her?

Do I just slide them under her where ever on just place them beside her and let them find their own way under the covers?

Do I remove the 3 eggs and golf ball she is still sitting on or can I take them out the next day ?
