Removed the two wooden eggs and slid the babies under. One I assume suffocated and was dead the next morn. the other 5 are doing great...............

New Maran owner here. I hope y'all don't mind pictures! I purchased 8 eggs. 7 hatched. It looks like I have 3 Black Copper Maran pullets (one with a few feathers on her legs), 1 Blue Copper Maran pullet, 1 Black Copper Maran cockerel with feathered legs, and 2 Blue Copper Maran cockerels. They are 4 weeks old today. I'm so pleased with my babies!

I just did this very thing today, Lisa! My BCMarans broody has been sitting for 3 weeks. She had stinky broody poo everywhere. I pulled all the eggs out and replaced them with about 15 chicks. I moved her into a new pen. She immediately clucked to the chicks, and seems quite content.

Lisa,
I attempted to put the chicks under her. When she saw the chicks she sat down and began clucking (purring, actually). I tucked a few under each wing and just sat the others near by. I just checked and she has all of them under her now.

That is SO cool! And she's a GREAT looking hen too. I take it, BCMarans tend to be a broody breed? (And good luck to you with your broody too, Lisa!)

IT DID NOT work . .. .We tried for over an hour to get her to accept the chicks. She just growled and pecked at them .. ..

First, she got up and drank, ate, and pooped. . . . Then she drank, ate, and pooped even more . ...

Then she went into the nest and sat down in her ring of hay and pecked and growled at any chick that came close!

She attacked one chick so bad - -- God love his soul - - one of my one week delaware chicks attacked her back by grabbing hold of her comb and swinging his little bitty one week body off of it.
You know that has to be all roo and I am going to have to add him to my collection of roos cause he is a cool little dude!

I have added chicks to broody marans but it was after thier own chicks had hatched and it was dark outside. I took a flashlight and slipped some Olive eggers that I hatched in the incubator under the Marans momma who had a few of her own chicks. I turned off the flashlight and went back in and crossed my fingers lol. She did accept them.
Now on the other hand, I recently had those 2 broody Key West hens that hatched out chicks together. They had a mess of them and finally jumped off the nest and all the chicks went with them. There were 3 eggs in there still hatching in the empty nests and it was kinda cold out. I took the eggs and put them in the incubator so they could hatch and stay warm. The next day I tried to give these babies back to thier mommas. Niether of them wanted them and both actually attacked them so I got stuck raising them myself lol.

Oh Lisa, I am so sorry.......... Can you try again well after dark so she just wakes up in the morning and thinks her eggs hatched? I have only ever heard/read to do it this way but I don't know much

Is she broken up now or back on her nest?
