Snowbird, I'm reposting because I would really appreciate a critique. No sugar needed. My birds usually carry their tails a little bit higher. The blue hen rarely lifts her tail. This is her usual carriage.

Hi, The tail angle at this age would not be a problem to me as I could use a few like this to breed some of my higher tail males to, it is much easier to raise the angle than it is to lower the angle.

The only thing I can nit pic is I personally would like to see more leg and foot feathering than what I see. Very nice Marans though.

Can we get back to the tail question? "V" versus "U" ? Was that pic that geebsie posted of the Brahma a "U" shape? And the previous one that geebs posted was a "V"? Is this correct? I haven't checked out my hens but will do so tonight.

From the sketch posted, it appears that hens should not have a cushion, either - I do have one that has a bit of a cushion - should I not use her for breeding, Don? I'll try to get a pic of her soon. We have had rain almost every day (as Don knows) here in Michigan, and my pens are all wet...muddy....disgusting. I'm so sick of rain!

I'm thinking I should be raising ducks! And my horses are literally up to their knees in mud. I'm amazed that I haven't had hoof issues with the horses this year. Still haven't been able to get into the pastures (which are growing out of control) this year because of all the mud and standing water. I literally had to build a bridge to get to my manure pile. (The chickens LOVE it!) I can barely get the grass cut between downpours. Farmers around me still haven't been able to plant this year. I have NEVER seen that before.

Thankfully, my coops are elevated.

I currently have FIVE

broody Marans hens setting, wonder if they will go the distance? I think they must have heard my laments about being lousy at successful incubation

Just had one Narangansett young hen hatch out 10 of 11 babies and she is free ranging with them, doing a wonderful mothering job! Now the lavender Blue Slate hen has decided to lay and be broody and the bronze hens have been doing so as well in one of the stalls! I wouldn't mind being overrun with poults and naturally hatched Marans chicks!

I was in Rogue River this weekend judging a dog show and was burned RED!! Now its lightening up but it was toasty at 72 degrees and some clouds, plenty of breezes and some GREAT dogs! Now back to figuring out when these broody girls' hatches are due

There will be no living with me for the next few days!!!

I agree on the leg feathering BTW. My hennie with the best leg feathering lost most of hers due to a incident whilst moving the Chikin Trakter.

Wynette, the brahma in the picture is a very poor quality example of a Large fowl Brahma. The Brahma reference was more to get a rise from me since the person knows I had a very large flock of Brahma Bantams until just recently when I got rid of them after 30 years with them.

I will say if a person is breeding for the V shape tail must keep a close eye on the and do not let them become pinched as it wiil keep them from winning in the shows. I like the small U shape since it is easier to keep it from going to pinched. Regardless if which we breed we must make sure the main tail stays relatively open. Most of mine are the V shape but would prefer the small U shape. To open up either the U or V just use a male with a more open tail with more soft feathers between the two rows of main tail.

They are not supposed to have much of a cushion and are not supposed to be too fluffy on the sides in the leg area.

The cushion is the feathers just before the tail coverts and the main tail feathers and mainly one line off bC has too much cushion puffed out on the side.
