Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Something dug holes on all four side of one of our runs last night. It was the one with the guineas and a few rooster in there. Luckily the birds were locked in thier coop. If not, they would of been toast because whatever it was, did manage to get in one of the holes and looked like it scratched or clawed at the door to the coop. I spent this morning filling in holes and trying to make stuff more secure. Kinda freaked out now.

Congrats on your hatch sewandgrow.

I found some food grade barrels on Craigslist that says they have screw off lids I was thinking these would be great to store feed in. It is so humid here that a regular metal trash can still gets the humidity even though its critter proof.

I saw that and am thinking about what to say.....I can't see them as clearly as I would like, (my monitor is seriously JUNK....need to hit my dad up today for a new one. Ohhhhhh Pops...look out I'm coming over to go monitor shopping!

) but I can see that they do not look normal to me. I can't put my finger on it because I cannot see it clearly.....DON what do you see?????

I will say that I would expect to see all of the chicks looking like the first one....and I believe the first one photo'd is a roo BTW.

Kim, I just see chicks that look mixed up. Either mixed up with different colors of Marans or out crossed to something else. I do not think pure marans.

Don, They are not mixed only have the 1 roo and 3 hens in that pen that is why this is so confusing! The roo is Splash Marans and the Hens I thought were Black Marans but may be just really really dark blue Marans

Can you do another test hatch from these birds? You know.. see if they pop up again. I personally would do another hatch to see what is produced. I wish I was there looking at them in person and could watch them grow, it would be so much easier.

Hey....BTW...forgot to ask, the chick in the second photo....is the line under the eyes normal??? I have not seen this before...this tells me that there is quite possibly something lurking in the background or it may be something coming out from another variety of Marans. I would think that the only variety of Marans that would have any of these wild type markings would be the Salmons. Just basically thinking out loud here....hoping others will chime in with their thoughts. They are interesting and I look forward to watching them mature to see how they end up.

Enggass~

Sounding pretty normal to me....I will check on my little splash roo that is the same age as yours and get back to you on his eye color.

Flgarden~ SOOOOO glad everyone is okay and you have no one MIA. Wheew!

Marans Friends~ I don't watch or listen to the news as it gives me huge anxiety attacks..I mean huge, so I have no clue as to the storms in the south or if they have even subsided, really wondering and thinking about all of our BYC family and friends in the affected areas and how they are doing.
Anyone heard from Debbi? Anyone heard from anyone in those areas? I seriously pray everyone is okay and that they are getting some much needed repreive from the storms.

I have a second batch in the brooder right now and they are looking very much the same will get more pics on here by Tuesday. I was not paying attn: to the eye mark so maybe I have something "lurking" in the parents?

Then you might not want to open the e-mail that I just sent you. It was sent to me by Ivy and is of the destruction at the hospital in Joplin, I believe....pretty incredible...

Hey Pink! I believe this lady is from your stock originally. I'm callin her BlueBell! She was quite skittish at first but now she's happy as can be and always comes callin for treats. I can't wait to get some good pictures of the four babies I got from you. One of the splash is looking to be a pullet and not a roo and I think she's going to be PRETTY! Need to find my card reader as I have tons from my SLR just no way to view them.
