Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

ayeupchuck- VERY pretty hen!

Bummer here. Our power was out for 4 1/2 hours yesterday.

I had eggs in the process of hatching. I had just taken 9 chicks out of the incubator before we left, and when we got back the temp in the incubator was down to 82. I just checked the eggs this morning and none of the dozen left in there have done anything.

Guess I will just have to leave them in there a few more days.

The chicks I took out were golden lakenvelders and a couple bantams. The marans eggs are still in the bator. The last batch of marans eggs were the ones that I lost when the rinkydinkubator quit working for me. (It never did work very well anyway.) My GQF has been working fabulously, but it doesn't do very well with no power.

I've got more marans eggs I can hatch, but I was hoping to have more chicks than this by now, and my girls are starting to molt. I'm only getting a couple eggs a day right now from 10 hens. I guess my hatching endeavors are going to have to drag on for a while.

I really wish I had a male mature enough for her. I think she could produce some really pretty offspring with the right Roo. Her lacing is really beautiful.

No....I haven't heard from Debbi yet. I only ever watch the news for the weather, but I'm seriously heartbroken over all the devastation down in Missouri. The last I heard from Debbi was two mornings ago when she was supposed to be getting the brunt of the severe weather that afternoon. I'm not gonna lie...I'm anxious after seeing how bad it has been down in her area.

Lynette! I second the Whew! that nothing got any of your stock. by the way...I promise I will get you some photos of my younguns particularly those lavender silver sussex you've been asking about. My life has been crazy...Yesterday was my first day off in 3 weeks and I will have one more day off next tuesday...that will be my only one for the next two weeks. That will be bird selling day, sorting chicks, and gardening...so hopefully I will get you an assortment of photos taken at the same time. I have a bang up looking blue birchen boy that every time I see I fall more in love with!!!

Ugh...Thats too bad about your incubator. I hope that the chickers are just slowed down a wee bit in hatching. I was sorting through some birds yesterday on my day off and I do think that I will have more splash cockerels out of Helen Byers stock than I can use. I know you had mentioned previously that you had been looking for a splash before, so if you end up wanting one...let me know. They are coming along nicely and are goof balls.

I was wondering too...besides losing power for a bit, did most of the bad weather miss you guys?

You are such a tease with those lav silvers LOL! Just kidding, pls take your time and post when you get a good break. I know its been crazy around here too. I can barely get online and keep my garden and the birds watered. DH is getting some short tanks and making some automatic waterers it is just too much trying to keep everything going in the heat. They have these long goat feeders at Tractor supply that bolt onto a fence and he is using those for the waterers with a float etc. I think they will be perfect.

Hope everyone is okay with all this insane weather. I am hearing thunder here now. No worries -we should just get some nice needed rain.

AyeUp that is one GORGEOUS baby girl you have there. That is how I like my blues to look dark and laced. I really like the darker head look. She looks like she will have a good amt of copper too.

I love those goat feeders...I use those for my older chicks feed. It keeps them from making such a mess and scratching out and wasting feed for me. you'll have to post some pics of what he sorts out with those for waterers...that would be something that I would be seriously interested in. With my crazy schedule once the heat kicks in here I constantly worry that they will run out of water when I am at work. I put in extra pans of water, but an automatic system would be fabulous!!

If you like dark blue laced girls...remind me to get some shots of my three oldest marans girls...they are gorgeous solid dark blue laced girls. The are very sweet too, which never hurts. I hope the weather behaves and is nice to you there. I'm heading out to work now, but perhaps I might find a few minutes to pop back on tonight to see how everyone's doing. I miss chatting with all you guys. By the way, I'd loooove to see some pics of your wee birchen babes!

oops...double post! Have a good day everyone...be back later...and hopefully there will be more gorgeous birds to look at then!!

Pinkchick tells me that she will be in my neighborhood this afternoon and is going to pick up this Splash Marans cockerel that she has fallen in love with.

She says that it is "Pure Davis". All I know is it eats a lot and is growing like an unwanted weed. I'm sure she will post some new pics soon....

I do love the darker blues and would love to see some of yours. The birchen babies are getting bigger. The female is a mean little terd (not to me but to other birds) She chased a full grown hen around the other day when she got out of her pen trying to spar with her lol.
I have 2 blue girls that have dark heads and lacing. One is the momma and one her daughter. The momma is Cocoa, she lays a big dark speckled egg and her daughter just started to lay and laying a smaller dark egg hopefully will get larger. I would love to have a whole flock just like them. Cocoa is a dq as far as show because she has a few feathers on her middle toe. Her daughter doesn't because I bred her to a cleaner legged blue male but her shank feathering is scant so I've got to get some bred in the middle ground LOL.
Holler if ya want to see mom and daughter and eggs. I was worried about Cocoa because she got a huge gash in her side (not sure if it was the fence or a roo incident) but it was big enough for me to put my entire hand into. I had to suture her up and she didn't lay for months after that! She recently started laying again. She is a big big girl and still won't go up on the perch now, or up into the nestbox since her accident but I am glad she is doing better.
