If her comb is single and that small, no way is she a banty close to point of lay. Even banties get the taller red comb when the are about to lay! I guess you will find out more hen she starts to lay. till then enjoy her pretty color! By the way Marans should have a dark slate colored foot.

Thanks! And about the laying age thing I had thought she's around the time when she'll start to get a bigger comb, as the one with her looked like she already had. Clearly she isn't going to lay an egg any time soon.

I'm guessing the one with her was a rooster and that they are both around 7 weeks. I think I got confused.

Hot....Hot..........Hot!!!!

I'm trying to get this photobucket smiley thing to work. I can get it to work in my email, but not on this forum. There must be a trick that I haven't tried.

I wanted to post the smiley on that last one, but got the link instead.

If it were me I would do a test hatch from pairing him with some solid blue and/or black birds. That's how I worked things when I didn't have enough birchens to go around. It takes a couple of generations to get the coloring the way I like it, but it is well worth it. I suppose you could try with that birchen pullet on him, but you would have to be really really selective what you keep as far as color tone of the birchen markings since there is gold leakage present in them. I'm pretty laid back about how long it takes me to get the direction I'm going....so I am not opposed to trying things a couple ways to see which produces better results.

I'm toying around with which pullets I might be able to select out from my hatches so I can start working on a lavender silver project pen....

Just what I need....another project. I do think they would be to die for tho.

Thanks that is kinda what I figured. I wish I could find some good birchens with no leakage around here but it seems most have it so I will have to work on my own. At least I will know what genes are and aren't there when I ever get done lol.

OMG I just went out to try to get some pics and that little blue birchen girl made me laugh so hard.
Apparently this cat still hasn't learned not to ever approach her.

Same cat running away after getting pecked on the head real hard by little miss Sassy. Is it just me or does that turkey look like he is laughing??
Miss Sassy is looking real pleased with herself too. Too bad my camera is so slow it missed the shot where she pecked him.

haha sounds like you have some crazy animals at your place.....sounds alot like what goes on here...minus the turkeys...I loooove it!

I'm likin the topline on that Miss Sassy of yours. Does she have the birchen markings coming in pretty evenly?

I totally agree with you about the birchens having lots of issues with the gold leakage. I looked into quite a few different people's stock before I bought hatching eggs and most seem to have the same issues. I decided it was 6 of one, half a dozen of the other...so I'm going to just work with what I got now and if something comes along that is just fabulous then I'll see about supplementing my stock with them....but what I've got going with the hatches this year...I'm really liking some of the improvements I'm seeing

Alright debbi....here is a couple shots I got last night of those splashers. The first two pics are of the same boy with the least amount of feathering. He also has the least amount of coppering, so I'm thinking he will possibly stay here. The third pic is of the darkest colored splash boy with the most coppering so far. I will get some better pics of him and that third other elusive cockerel. He is quite the ham. The second he sees the camera he runs and hides behind a tree...or their building...or a group of birds. He's not shy at all any other time...i think the camera freaks him out haha
forgive their feathering...they are starting to molt in this heat. yarg!
I'm thinking with a few more weeks growing time all three of these boys will be built!

I'll load some other pics of my stock here soon....its still working pretty slowly for me, but I'll get there.

Thanks Vicki! That third pic is more what color I am looking for. Heavy on the shank feathering would be even better. Did you get your Splashes from Helen? I'm working on shank/toe feathering and combs right now, and need all the help I can get!

Most of the cats stay far away from sassy even the big tomcats. My dd's lab is afraid of her too. I hope she doesn't peck the wrong critter one of these days though.

Here is some pics of the little birchen roo. Again, he is cleaned shanked..all 3 of the birchens are. It is on the list of fix-its lol. He is standing funny in this pic and he is a little dirty because it has been muddy here all week due to the rain. His tail is not normally held this way lol. His birchen on his back and upper wing is coming in more cream than silver but hard to tell in the pics. His hackles are starting to come in nice and silver.
The black birchen girl is in front of him. SHe is darker black than in this pic. She is mossy or has brown leakage (whichever you wanna call it lol). I thought she was gonna be a roo for awhile there.

Here is a couple of side views of the male birchen.

Another one. Do you see this little blue girl on the left? She is a little older than this birchen roo (no relation). She is from my smallest blue pullet that is about half the size of a regular blue marans. This baby girl is way smaller than her mother was at this age so it will be interesting to see how big she turns out when fully mature. Her name is Little Pooper

Haha...yeah..I figured that boy is what you would be kind of looking for. He is a nice bird..and would not even think of getting rid of him except for the fact that his coppering is coming in so much. What i do like about his copper tho is that it is a deep rich red so far. I'll keep you updated on him with photos and I'll get some pics of the others...also some of the splash girls I'll be posting photos of here in a while if it cooperates with loading are from the same line. That way you can see some of the consistencies in that bloodline. I always find that helpful when trying to see what I'm working with. And yes. All the splash photos I have so far are from Helen. I do have two splash girls I haven't gotten shots of yet from my own stock that are looking nice, but I'll make a note that they are from my stock if I post them.
