Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

here's a few of my girls getting spoiled by Gigantor. I had thrown some prairie grass in the pen and he was frantically running to the pile and bringing back blades of grass for the girls. No wonder they adore him and would follow him to the ends of the earth. Me thinks they might have withdrawls when I separate them for their breeding pens later this year. I just love, love, love that black girl in the front. She is so striking when she is running around on the lawn.

Here's one of the splash girls from Helen's stock...she's a regular butterball with a wee short little tail...I love that!

another splasher...from my stock...she's a bit older than the previous one...her leg feathering is kinda sparse, but I've got the perfect cockerel to put her with for some good feathering!

here's an F1 generation cross between a silver cuckoo and a blue hen. I'm deciding how I'm going to be using her as her silver marking on the neck are gorgeous, but crossing her back to the cuckoo cockerel would also give me some patterned blue cuckoos....suppose I could do both...

This is for you Lynette! Here is one of the only non-blurry shots of my little speed demon oldest blue birchen chick. He's still developing, but I'm liking how he's looking so far. He's got a wee bit of pale goldish tone coming in, but I'm ok with working that out through culling and careful crosses.

ok....last photo of the day I promise...this is one of my favorite colored birds of the year so far. I'm going to be using this Ameraucana to make my F1 generation of olive eggers probably this next spring. I'm curious to see what colors come out of the cross....I haven't decided what color to cross them with yet, but I want to try to maintain some of that lemony sweetness!

LOL I am so impatient! I think I might have a major meltdown/tantrum if she made me wait another month!

Thanks for the compliment on her egg! I am really excited to see what her younger sisters lay--now to wait again LOL urgghhh....

thanks...they are my favorite...the blues with the lacing and the deep tones. Like Lynette I love the darker neck and head too.....there is just something about that deep tone that makes me melt

LOL no kidding! I've never been the patient type so owning chickens has forced me to sit back and wait. I do have to say this--my house is never cleaner than when I have chicks hatching! I've even been known to scrub floor boards and oil cabinets just to keep busy!

It is interesting that chickens are teaching me a life lesson haha!

haha thanks...I have my moments of insecurity where I wonder if I even have anything good....then other days where I can't believe how far they have come along in the last year and a half. The funny part is that those photos are just tiny fraction of what I've hatched out this year. I have a few other breeds mixed in the younger pens at the moment, but as I cull through and narrow down things I'll separate them from each other and get some more shots. I've promised Lynette some pics of my other colors of stock too...so photos will continue to be added. I finally feel like I'm catching up a bit

I am a newbie, and would like information on the Maran (Cuckoo) disposition. Everything I've read says that they are basically "cuckoo", but I would like to have some if those statements are not true. We have enough "cuckoos" around here, as it is!

We have a cuckoo boy and a cuckoo hen and they are pretty mellow. They are in a pen together and the boy is very cool about us coming into the pen to collect eggs, even the kids. He just moved off to the side!
