Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Yes, the fuzzies are growing, 2 1/2 weeks now. Counted toes and checked feet feathering the other day, and found two to cull out due to only 4 toes on one foot, and the other had poor feathering. They are funny to watch sparring! They do a little Ninja dance with each other, then they all take off running in circles!

I've got the 7 Partridges in one brooder, and the other 7 of assorted colors in the other. Can't wait till I can take them outside for a play day, but can't do it in this heat. They are all just too darn cute!

I like to mark the first obvious defects early in my birds too, no matter the breed. I've got both some fawn and dun dorkings growing out...never had 5 toed birds before...ended up with a couple of 4 toed birds as well...gonna have to bite the bullet and send one of the girls to another flock for a layer soon....gonna be hard tho. I love those dun laced beauties!

I will find it much easier to cull out the Silkies with flaws than my Marans. I know the Silkies will go to pet homes, the Marans, who knows? I'm not opposed to eating the birds, but in my old age, I'm getting soft on the "off with their heads" thing. In this heat, no one seems to want to butcher any roos, can't blame them there! I may have a nice home for JR. She has a bunch of chooks, loves eye candy, and colored eggs. Not into breeding or showing, just a pet flock. She has Cuckoos, but their egg color is typical hatchery, pee-poor color. He would surely darken her eggs up, give her some olive eggers, and would definately be eye candy for her yard! I know once she sees him, he'll be going home with her. She's a good chicken mama!

MathAce~ You asked me why Gnarles was ix-nayed from the breeding pen.....see Debbi's boys comb??? This is exactly why....STUPID COMBS...... I have a boy with a comb that puts the icing on the STUPID COMB CAKE. I will post a photo of it this morning if I can wake my sister so that I can borrow her camera to take a pic.

Debbi~ My gal that looks like Olivia is coming up to point of lay pretty soon, her completely black comb and wattles that she has had from hatch are almost all nice bright pinkish red.....she is still jet black with one visible copper hackle feather. Almost can't wait to see her egg....if it is anything like the Bill girls egg who has just started laying, I'll do the happy dance for days...even in the stupid rain. Yes it is raining again here this morning...go figure. DUMB!!!!!!!

Mornin' Pink! How did I miss this post?? I was just looking at Olivia in the front yard. Her comb is now a mottled black and very red, so I expect her to lay at any time. She is still very black, but OMG, what a CHUNK she is!!! Love those plus sized girls! Charlotte chose to stay inside the run today, so maybe she will lay me another egg. Rain??? Pleeeease send some of that this way! The birds, even the young ones, have learned to love the hose here lately! Where they used to run and hide, they now stand, ruffle feathers, and spread wings!
