Good morning people of Marans Land!
Pretty here this morning, and cool...for now. Supposed to break 100* today, again. Got out to the chickens early this morning, about 6:15. They were all up but no one wanted out of the run. I'm thinking the boys have learned that most of the hens stay in the run to avoid the boys, so now the boys want to be where the girls are? Oh no, out you go! So me and the rake ushered all the men out the door. Of course, there was the usual flurry of testosterone when two of the pullets got brave and ventured out. Seems like it's the same game every morning, "who's the top dog here"? So one by one, they all challenge each other, except for Roy. They all know that Roy and Clyde are the alphas, and thus there are no disputes with them. I decided to have my first cup of coffee with them and Otho, my male Shepherd. It was very peaceful except for when the Cooper's hawk flew overhead. Rrrraaaawwwwooooo!!!! I love the velociraptor alert calls!
Mr. Cooper decided to fly right on by. I think all the cats mingleing with the chooks helps there too. Even the little roo who started crowing at 4 weeks was froggy this morning! He's 7 weeks old today, and I caught him doing the drop-wing dance to his lady room mate, Solo! Oh Lord, give me strength!
No one is taking on any roos around here, maybe when the weather cools off? Gees, wonder why no one wants to butcher any birds right now??
