Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

The eggs were well marked and in colour varieties. The most "stinking dark" were Bev Davis (Black Copper) and Jesus Llano (Black Copper and Cuckoo). As you can see from the table, there were LOADS of stinking dark eggs at Crossroads from ALL colour varieties.

I was trying to make going to crossroads work...but couldn't get out of work...had I been able to go...I'm sure I would have stood in front of that table for a LONG time....trying to just soak in the reality of what I was seeing!! I'm so thrilled to see such lovely eggs, even if they are in a photo! haha

My Cuckoo eggs, if they hatch, are probably some of the lighter eggs on the table which I'm NOT complaining about because all those eggs are seriously respectable. I can only hope they are as nice as your cuckoos. Definitely a good place to start.

Are you a member of the MCC USA club? If you are keen on cuckoos, you probably should be ...

Debbi, the thing that was curious - both Wynette and I thought the feathering looked great on a couple of them - full line, uninterupted, looked even, including the outside toe and still, Edgar said it was not enough.

So I hope he does educate us.

I did enjoy the birds that had countable leg feathers. Mine are like that!

That's what I like, a hard feather that looks like a feather, and not fur.

I'm thinking a few of my new blue babies are going to be this way! Only one right now has questionable feathering.

yeah I'm a member...I don't get onto the yahoo group much because I can never remember my password and keep trying and then it locks me out and I get frustrated...ya know...that whole silly cycle hahaha i might just have to see if i can start a new yahoo account and move on from there
i raise cuckoos, black coppers, birchens and this next spring have lined up to source some solid blues to go with the solid blue girls that have no man....and will be workin on breeding some blue coppers out of my bcm cockerel Gigantor.

Clearly, the bottom line is "type". That is where all the points are. Colour, combs, and leg feathering are minor details when it comes to points. (That was VERY evident from the judging results at Crossroads.) Unfortunately, egg colour doesn't enter into SOP stuff.

I ask because if you are keen on Cuckoos, you might want to promote/support them for the next bid to the APA for SOP approval and the club is the place to make your intentions known. (Cuckoos are being considered but the club has to believe there is enough support to get them approved.)

me thinks you might be right....sometimes this girl needs a swift kick in the butt. I'm a low key kind of person and will plug away at things because I love them and should see if I can help varieties get the work and recognition.... hmmm....I'm gonna have to do some thinkin

You have some very nice Cuckoos. I encourage you to at least lurk on the MCC USA board and follow their activities/direction. You have something to contribute.

That is if they are the correct type of combs and they have shank feathering. Otherwise, there are two DQs right out of the box, the typiness won't matter a tinkers darn!

Egg color has nothing to do with the conformation, but it does have a lot to do with the breed, and with my personal preferences. It's why I got into this breed in the first place, as I suspect others did as well.

YES! I figured out how get yahoo to let me change my password without locking it first so I give up! I am on the yahoo group finally after about 6 months. Thanks for pushin me! haha...I probably will lurk for a while, and slowly work my way in...kinda like I did on here.

Thanks for the compliments on my Cuckoos...They are beautiful to me, but know they still have lots of work to be done, but your encouragement means a lot! I sometimes second guess myself on whether I have things to contribute or not.

2 (yes, 2) feathers counted as shank feathering (one on the toe, one on the leg), and yes, they all had combs.

Sprigs were DQ'd - heavily. Yellow legs were an issue, believe it or not. Marans still have a way to go.

I don't disagree with you for a minute about egg colour. For me, egg colour is where we start. But, as you well know, that won't enter into results at shows. (Although it makes me feel better to see a nice, dark egg laying in the cage in the morning ... )
