I have not yet ventured into the world of birds from breeders...there are suprisingly few to choose from in my area (in the middle of Dallas and Fort Worth) that have the breeds I am interested in.

well crap! I can suggest a couple of people to you then that would be closer. Shawnee, OK is a ways away....about 3 1/2 hours from Dallas area. I used to live near Lyndale, TX a loooooong time ago. Are those last two pics of different girls? If so...the lacing on those is nice and crisp for splash.

Can you explain "crow head" to me? My first thought is a bird with a head shaped like a crow but seeing how I am not that familiar with a lot of chicken breeds, I wanted to check.

You are not far off

the head is more flat on top and will lack any depth or real roundness.... also...in some cases I've seen when it is pretty severe...the whole beak shape will be off...how do I explain it...the beak will be elongated and will lack the curve a normal beak will have....

Ok....cause I was gonna say...you got lucky getting two girls marked so evenly from a hatchery...haha.. I wouldn't use that first one for breeding tho if you ever decide to take that leap...the light shafting in the center of the feathers is a big no no (totally fine if you are just looking for a laying flock, etc.)..just like me talking Wyandotte breeding on a Marans thread is

anyone have any info on this?

I'm not 100% sure. There are a few genetics savvy people on the Marans forum, so hopefully they will be able to drop in and give you some advice. Village Chicken would be a good one to talk to I believe. He's got a pretty good grasp on coloring and etc.

ha ha sorry to derail the tread a little (I gots three more BLRW in with the BCM...we will see how they turn out!)! gilavina, THANKS for all of the great info, and humoring a newbie! I am sure I will have a TON of questions to come!

No problem...we all love seeing people getting interested in Marans...and I personally love seeing people getting into the Wyandottes. Feel free to PM me if you have more questions. I grew up in a Wyandotte raising family, so those I can definitely help you with

The Marans I do pretty ok with, still learning just like everyone else

Gilavina,

Thanks! I gotcha now. The head should have something closer to a parrot shape with the nice round appearance instead of looking more like a crow with the flattop look.
