I don't understand how there can be indecision on whether or not the legs were really yellow.
They must of Looked yellow to have it even come into debate..... How was it defended?
What could possibly sway someone into believing yellow isn't really yellow ? ? ?

I am not trying to start anything.... I am just trying to understand the situation....

Could you enlighten us BarnGoddess01 with more details ? ? ? ?
PM me if you don't want to go into this on the forum... I really want to understand this.

I posted that just for you, Debi, and Lisa. I knew you all would appreciate it, and KNOW I was kidding!

On the other hand, I think Bev liked my girl.

I am gonna work on her.....

MEL - - - I would of fallen for Kathy's joke too, IF I hadn't been on the receiving end of her jokes before....
I think Kathy must have some Irish in her bloodlines because she can sure let the "Blarney" flow.....

Kathy, did you forward a copy of your ANNOUCEMENT to Bev or are you waiting for her to discover it on her own?

I am waiting for Miss Bev to make her own announcement about how she fell in love with my Delaware hen!

I prefer the round heads....usually birds with a round head will balance out the overall look of a bird too. For me its about the look of the whole bird. I've had some birds with fantastic head shape, but still cull them due to another factor in the body of the bird that would cause me problems later on. Its all about balance for me. One of my favorite sayings from this thread is "build the barn first, paint it later". Meaning getting the body type dialed in and then working on details. It has made the challenge of the Marans seem much more doable to me since I got into them.

Sorry, got to disagree here. This is what the SOP says for the heads of both males and females:

"HEAD: Moderate in size, slightly flattened on top, and long."

ha ha that bad, huh?

Well, they are SUPPOSED to be BCM...here are pics from last week (four weeks old in these pics).

There are three of them. One has more feathering than the other two, and one has very long legs...and very sparse feathering on it's legs. Obviously, I hold out no hope that these are of any quality whatsoever, and simply hope for darker eggs...but eventually I want to get some good quality ones...they are beautiful!

oh...I was gonna say, just as something to watch for. I'm seeing some crow head goin on with those chicks..

First, let me say that I have not hatched any where the number of chicks that you have gilavina, BUT I do wonder how reliably you can judge for crows head this early in the game.
I am just thinking that a baby's head does change as it grows and I would think a chick would too.

At this age, I look for leg featherings and mossiness on my cockerels.
In a couple of weeks, I start looking for comb issues.

correct...I was talking in generalities and should have been more specific about that. I have noticed there is still a bit of a rounded appearance to the best Marans birds I've seen that have gotten good placements...they do have a bit of a flatter top...I'm assuming on the Males its for better comb carriage. As far as the long...there is long and then there is crow head long...and its a fine line and probably truly has more to do with personal preference and interpretation. The thing that can be hard about the SOP of any breed or color, is that there are so many ways to read it and yet again, many ways that a judge reads it and decides to place a bird based on how they see the standard. ....Again, for me its about the balance of the bird and what you are comfortable with.

Yup, I agree with you there. Everyone tends to interpret the SOP their own way, even the judges. A good example is the shank feathering issue. I have a nicely colored pullet, with what I would say is a gorgeous head...except for the CARNATION COMB!!!!!!!

indeed...that's why I just said it might be something to watch for...I might be a bit unconventional in how I do things, but I am fascinated by growth and development of birds and sometimes they do grow out of it and sometimes they don't. I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers by mentioning it at all

By the way, good to see you Lisa!! Where've you been girl??

Got to go to town today, may trot by the Amish community on my way home to see about butchering some roos. I may actually get to use that chest freezer I bought!
