Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I didn't get to meet either one, but I saw the barn goddess around and she is on the left so must be Wynette on the right.

Sue, I saw you at the dinner, but you were never "free" for me to be able to grab you to introduce myself - I'm so sorry and I was totally disappointed! I REALLY wanted to say hello! Nice job on handing out the awards, and KUDOS for having such good control with the account!

On the shank feathering issue, Bev had sent me two pictures a few months ago of what she felt was the "perfect" amount of feathering - I posted them, I BELIEVE, in the SOP thread.

I'm gonna have to try to go hunt those pics down..do you remember if it was more towards the beginning of the thread?

The SOP thread shouldn't be filled with a bunch of chit-chat - of COURSE chit-chat has it's place, but that thread should be ONLY SOP talk, so most definitely it won't be nearly as long as this thread or the variety threads. I've requested Edgar Mongold to weigh in again on teh shank feathering just so we are all clear, and because MAYBE the appropriate amount of shank feathering has changed...

Thanks!

Wynette, I went and found the SOP thread and looked at the pics. I remarked on the pics as to the type I prefer, so the thread has now gotten back on page one. Really had to dig for that thread, sure hope it stays more to the forefront...

thanks Debbi! I'm gonna go look here in a sec and see! Its something I've questioned alot on my birds is the leg feathering how much is too much or not enough

Yes Pink I do!!!! She is the one that throws these nice skulls...

that is extreme vaulting.... note I said slightly... not a little not alot or not extreme vaulting... (aka silkie)... It is just a descriptive word.... I am sure there is a better one.. Just don't know what it is in referring to chickens... Maybe walt... (rhymes with Vawlt....okay off track daggit!!)

has a better word.... We start using equestrian terms that will be a whole mess for my head!!! LOL... have enough trouble separating my herd.... I mean flock!!!

Pink: Rumor has it that you have a couple of Birchen males in the nieghborhood??? hmmmmm Got anything to produce offspring in the birchen color yet??? (great way to test your hens.) Okay so tell about the birchen eggies!!! I missed that as I was speed reading... (durp moment inserted here)

Wynette, Edgar Mongold has said since day one on BYC that the Marans Shank Feathering should be similiar to the Langshan shank feathering.

I do have a couple of Birchen boys running around here.

I have not tested them with anyone yet, they are still in quarantine. I am planning on testing only the larger of the 2 males and the other male will go into the bachelor pen for now. I am test mating all of the girls with my Lil' Bill right now, the first of those eggs are in the 'bator set for hatch on Monday the 7th, cross your fingers.

I have a couple of gals in mind to definitely test with the large Birchen male. He is HUGE!!!! He is not too much smaller than Bill and he is just a tad over 5 months. The younger male is not even close to the same size.
and about the Birchen eggies....I ordered them from BJ's Poultry, same folks that Raven got hers from...I couldn't take it anymore and had to get some Birchens. I can't wait to get them here and cooking away in the 'bator. Will definitely post photos of them once they get here.

Kim, it sounds like that one birchen boy of yours has really good size on him. I don't remember what you said about leg feathering? Does he have a nice amount?
I'm working on procuring for myself some possible birds....we'll see...but I'M EXCITED!
