The sad fact is I cannot comment on this roo because I am so JEALOUS I pretty much can't see straight. I feel VERY strongly that he should be Canadian ....

He is a beauty and I hope that you can find one too!

Marans of any colour are all but unheard of north of the border at this point. But some of us are working HARD to change that fact. (Doesn't change all the envy we feel when we see a boy as nice as your splash, or even, for that matter, the Blues Brothers!!!!! )

Are you working to bring some over the border? I really hope you guys can source some awesomeness and show Canada what the Marans are all about

haha aren't we all. But honestly, that's what I love about this thread...there are so many people that have different viewpoints

The thing I find interesting about Big Boy and Gigantor (my BCM boy previously posted a while back)...while people like them now...they were ugly when they were young. Without a doubt, in the last two years of raising Marans is that I have learned to go with gut and if something is telling me to keep a bird...I listen. By far these are two of the best males I've hatched out so far...and I have hatched a ton of boys in my time raising them. When they were young if I were to look at just what they had then and culled them...man, I would've been missing out on some pretty sweet roos!

Probably because over the years and a bunch of birds later, you've developed an "eye" or sixth sense for good birds. Again, fine looking Splash!

Anyone out there with a handsome Blue Copper? So I know what to look for as I am shopping around for Roos for my two lonely ladies. I need to make sure I get get my girls a nice a handsome Roo.

Keep those photos rolling.

haha probably doesn't hurt that I've been around birds since i was a kid.
On that cuckoo boy...how old is he? the one thing about him is that he has white tail feathers...its a pretty common problem, but you will want to breed away from that. If possible, getting a roo with no white feathers in his tail is optimal...but again, it depends upon your end goal with the Marans and etc.

Some people are working on that as a project.

Some people also have golden cuckoos, is that what you mean? Or did you mean lemon like the lemon cuckoo orps?

They are doing okay. I was noticing the other day how the other black birchen female is getting onery just like her sister lol. She was chasing a cat trying to peck it. The little blue male birchen is starting to feel his 'oats' and chasing the females now. He is also very stubborn and won't go into his brooder coop at night. He likes to sit on top and watch the moon come up while sitting with one of the white orp girls. Its time to get them into a breeding pen I guess lol. Yesterday we got one nest box done and that was all. Too much running around doing errands. Maybe today we will get more done. I ran out of recycled 2x4's so have to go down to H.D and get a few more for door frames.
