now see...I think that is freaking awesome! I wish I learned that way...maybe I would have paid better attention. Wait...maybe I was just bored...my grandma had taught me how to write and was well on my way to learning cursive by the time I went to kindergarten...I was bored there too...in all honesty...I got sick of the whiny kids and all I wanted to do is go play outside. I used to try to sneak baby animals in my backpack to take to school with me. My parents got wise to that pretty quick when one of the runt baby pygmy's was missing from their little carrier....

I figured if I had to be stuck inside...at least let me have something fun to play with

I had a trap line that I would check early in the morning before school. I was too small to carry a gun, so when I caught a skunk (we had lots of skunks back then) I would have to dispach it with a stick. No time to change clothes before school.....funny thing, no matter what grades I got, I was always promoted to the next grde (and a different teacher).

Can't imagine why......

There are still some old one room schools here that were used up until the mid 1960s here. Sadly, most are on private farms, and used to store grain. The bells and wood stoves have been long since removed.

there are a few left around here...we always did a field trip to the one room school house on the state fair grounds in Lincoln...dressed in traditional clothing and learned for the day there using all the authentic materials. I loved it!!

OK....I'll come clean on that....It was a story that my dad told me about his youth, I think he was born in 1905.
Ol' dad was pretty amazing. When he married mom he was over 50 & she was 21. Seven months later, I was born!

Nope, no lie here. No whether it was the times, or my antiquated teacher that insisted, I have no clue. But that's the way I learned to use a "pen" and cursive.

Had to be the teacher. Those desks with ink wells are like from the early 1900's and I KNOW you are not that old, cuz you know how to use a computer and change your monitor when it dies

You'd be surprised. We used those ink wells up until the sixth grade...in CT no less!! My teacher was quite old, as was the Principal. Both had been my Dad's teachers. The Principal, Mis Bolldizar, was all of 98 lbs soaking wet, but carried a huge, thick yard stick as a weapon! I remember seeing her whack the daylights out of bad boys! She struck total fear in my little heart, so I would make her cards for the holidays! I can remember walking into her office, to this day, shaking almost uncontrollably, to give her my suck-up cards!

She really was a sweet old gal, but back then, you sure didn't want to get sent to the Principal's office!

Mrs. Leach, the English teacher, was probably 75 or so when I had her, and my Dad always remarked how old she was when he had her! Wish there were more teachers like that these days; you didn't DARE get bored in their classes!!

X2... on the other hand I grew up watching green acres cause my mom & dad watched it. On VHS I'm pretty sure.... and just so you know the whole VHS tapes will becoming our "sadly I remember it well" statement Vicki.

haha no kidding. my dad is a western and country hillbilly fanatic, so I grew up watching gunsmoke, green acres, etc...all of them...well...I should edit that to say, when we finally got a tv...then it was quite a few years before they even got a VCR. I'm grateful I was raised that way...I learned to think for myself, take pride in working hard, developed great hobbies and enjoy silence and being by myself. And I still take pride in moving more and more towards self sufficiency like how my parents raised me. I love simple living. But don't think I could part with all of you on the Marans thread here ...heheh...the internet is my luxury!

My dad loved the obvious like john wayne: cowboys, cogburn, sons of katie elder, rio grand, tru grit, longest day. Also Shane and I can't remember there was a show we used to watch all the time. I finall bought him the entire dvd set...hmm gunna have to think on it
