Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have been thinking of making some of those old fashioned pot holders that actually look like a chicken. I was just thinking I needed more potholders last night and found that pattern for them again. Seems like we never have enough during the holidays, or else I can't find them lol! I am gonna make a couple for my mom and grandma and maybe a few cow potholders since I have some black and white spotted cow material that I haven't done anything with.

Lynette and Kim,

I realize we all use different bators, but do you guys use the egg cartons for the entire incubation period, or only in lockdown? The one time I did it was only in the lockdown, as the eggs were in the LG turner. With this new bator, the whole unti tips back and forth, so cartons could be used the whole time, but then what would the purpose be to that?

I use them all the time, I really like them. I am new to hatching so I may change my mind. I like that the eggs don't get bumped around too much. Easy clean up too

I have an egg turner and then only put in the egg carton during lockdown. I have 2 LGs that I have a love hate relationship with lol. I have got them down to a science now though. I put computer fans in both of them. Only one has an egg turner so I use the other one for hatching. I also use a regular thermometer and hygrometer and then a digital one that has the drop in probe so I can keep a careful eye on things. I've had excellent luck with my own eggs in these and so so on shipped eggs (which is always risky anyways). I need to get or make another incubator at some point but had so many broodies last spring that I hardly used the bators at all lol. If you want super reliable broodies get Key West hens!!!
They have done better than my silkies and the orpingtons that I got for broodies or any other hens that I have.

My incubator is homemade with a homemade turner and I use the big egg carton trays in that (flats egg cartons) and then I use the Styrofoam ones in lockdown.

(you can see it on my BYC page)

For that reason, and the fact that I have about 4000 styrofoam egg cartons now, I may use those in the next incubator project.

I just put them down in the bottom hatching tray with the eggies in them like this.........as you know they are in the upper trays during incubation, trays are set on automatic turning.

I have been collecting mine for a long time. The feed store let me have some, then a few from some here and there. The other day the neighbor gave me about 75-100 and at dinner last night, my SIL had some in her car 25 or more and more coming she said. My barn is full! the bad part is once I get my permit to sell eggs, I have to use the 300 new ones I bought. But the new ones I can't use in the bator. they are the clear plastic ones and I can't really cut the bottoms out. Tried to drill them with a paddle bit to no avail.

Grocery Bags full at a time!!!!! Santa, I DON'T want any egg cartons for the new year! I do want more Marans EGGS and plenty of PULLETS from those eggs.
