Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Sorry these photos have been posted before but they show the carnation really good and heck with all the talk about it and some folks not knowing what it is or looks like, I can't see that posting them over and over would hurt.

These photo's are the same cockerel, one photo at approx. 4-6 weeks of age and the other photo he is about 4-5 mos.

I hate to say it but I believe this is what Debbi, was referring to when she was talking about the Combs with this shape having Penne influence. I agree with Debbi on this type of Comb.

Awwww...that's sweet, I'll tell him you ladies got his back, he'll appreciate it since he has been living the bachelor life for a while, I'm sure he has been missing the love...but if he is still complaining about these photos being taken last year or the year before (I can't remember which) he needs to get over himself.

This was the front view.....what do you think he was thinking in this one?????

The little round nubbs....it is not carnation, it just has extra little nubbs on the blade. Now I've posted these photos before and was told there was nothing wrong with his comb. The only question on his comb was from Don and he asked if he saw a sprig on it...well there is not sprigs............................................

Kim, I started culling everything two year ago that had a comb like this. Notice the blade turns slightly to one side and has several points like Debbi has been talking about ?

It is time for the SOP breeders to get together and do some test breedings to actually be able to say what causes these faults. We know what causes the Carnation we just need to breed fowl without it being in the bloodlines. The man in Florida that sold these initial Marans sold eggs and chicks all over the USA, and he is not the only one to do so. Check the egg sellers and most only stay around for 2-3 years and are gone.

Just stop and think if someone could post that their Marans fowl were tested clean for Penne influence. I should not say that as someone will in short order post eggs from Carnation free Marans.

Gnarles is not the first cockerel I started out with....he is the 3rd, so he is not directly related to few remaining original hens I have left from my original Davis birds. Those hens crossed over Gnarles do not throw offspring with carnation, fact they have never thrown anything weird with either rooster, Bill or Gnarles..so do you think they are safe?

Kim, I would do a test breeding and try an out of breed mating. If you have had several young from this male and nothing showed up until the outcross. Until people start testing their Marans I would not buy eggs or chicks from anyone, Everyone probably has this Penne blood.

I tell ya what I think I can do soon as I have the time to switch up some birds.....I am going to put the birds from Florida back in with Gnarles and set some more eggs as soon as they are clear of Lil' Bill stuff. Then I will put my Barnevelder rooster in with my original hens and do some test eggs. Oh...Mr. Ughzie buggzie boooo, my Barnie roo is all to happy to mingle.

This year I bought 12 wheaten eggs off ebay and hatched 6 chicks and one male and one female had a big Carnation Comb much bigger than anything I have seen on here. I wish I had of kept the male would of done some test matings out of breed to set up a testing program.

I would suggest that anyone belonging to one of the Marans clubs start talking to them about the problem and get it out in the open. This has been kept covered up for to long.

I still plan on raising some Blue Coppers.
