Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

What you you do. Contact the seller, and complain, or just chuck and forget it?
At least it was only $25.00.
I mean, they did send what they had advertised.

I WOULD let them know that you aren't happy with the colour of the eggs and that you don't intend to hatch them - that they really don't meet Marans standards - but I also wouldn't expect them to do anything about it or to be happy to hear from you. But I'd still tell 'em!

Jacob, This is the type and color BC male I used in my breeding program. I can not really fault him. I would not breed female with very high tails to him though as then you would get a lot of high tail young. If you can just pick your best 1-2-3- females and single mate so you know where the young are from. The male is very nice type though, too bad there are not more around like him.

Ok thanks!

Maybe it's just small time crazy old Canadian me but seems to me if we culled according to that list of faults and DQs, we wouldn't have any Marans at all. The perfect chicken simply does not exist and certainly not in a variety as new as Marans.

Surely we have to pick our battles and work on eliminating the problems a bit at a time?

I'm thinking the same thing. Have a battle plan. I have one rooster who I see as the best at this point, and he has a white feather. While using him will probably increase the white, I will also get more birds with the correct coloring. But I am still mulling this over. And have a few other lines in the incubator!

My goal is to have three breeding pens and rotate the roosters. Looking for progress.

Shape. Body shape is something I struggle with. I have many varieties of birds to look at and compare. Body shape --I would like to see pics and clear examples of body shape.

Must not be the week for Marans Roos. My Redneck, who was injured several weeks ago from fighting, I found him in a pile with his wings spreed out and his leg stuck out the back. He was in a pen by himself, what on earth did he do? He could have been fighting through the pen but gees.... Anyway time will tell but I don't think it looks good for him.
