Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Does anyone know of any good Maran breeders in Maryland or Southern PA? I have black copper, blue copper, birchen and a wheaton. Would like to get 1 or 2 blue hens and if there are any other color varieties I would be interested in them as well. Thanks!!!

I bought them.... You eggs come out looking funny, sorta like a spinning top toy.

They are a PITA to assemble and Clean.

Lastly, only my smaller eggs will fit through the hole you are suppose to use at the top of the eggie. My other eggs have too big of a yolk and it won't go in the hole.... It ends up making a mess outside of the egg.

You will spend less time just peeling the eggs, than assembling and cleaning the eggies

.you have taught me how and what to look for mr VC. i am not trying to pick on anyones birds i am just learning and just a beginner. compared to many. iv learned the hard way on everything i do. and leg color is no exception.
i had yellow shanks hiding in my flock and hopefully i have it cleared up
its like the west coast swing.ive been learning the hard way. loli keep makeing mistakes but i learn bettwr when i fail . i guess thats life

yes, i think some are more pinkish than others,,,hmm, i know that in the u.s. standard calls for a light to mid-slate color, but the french standard calls for the pinkish/white, but slate or gray is acceptable,,,,what other wheaten influences would show up? I'll have to look more closely to see exactly what colors are there

I can definitely see the difference between my full-bred BCM pullets and the BCMxRed Star layers...can't really explain - something in the head/eye and something in the body carriage.

I need to learn what the BEST Marans look like, so my eye is picking them out of the flock!

Marans eggs are the WORST for hard boiling. Even 2 weeks old, those suckers won't peel clean. Sheesh. I'm gonna have to resort to grocery store eggs for hard boiling.

(My EEs are good for hard boiling. They seem to peel clean even quite fresh.)

wheaton chicks are born yellow or white down a cinnamon wing triangle would b another dead give away pinkish white legs are somw of the trates that set them apart

I haven't had a Marans egg to try. It's my Barred Rock's and EE's that are driving me crazy.

I boiled a bunch and peel them without a bit of trouble for the FIRST TIME. . . . . . .

So, I am not the one to give advice until I repeat that a few times
