Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

oh...and I think I'd be pushing my luck to hope for a second sportsman from him.

I don't really care what he gets me, he's one of the only ones that gets my chicken hobby and always gets the best gifts!

I'm in love with this pullet even though she has too dark of eyes. She is the one that I posted yesterday for Math to add to the list of faults.

This is the normal look I get when I try to come close to her. She was hatched and raised by a broody (her and that cockerel with the half white looking hackles...they both hate me

), so I have handled her very little and she does not like to have anything to do with my funny business, especially the camera. I still love her...I think she is a beautiful bird.

eta: she does not have white on her, she is just dirty.

Little Miss T-R-O-U-B-L-E!

Lil' Bill's 1st daughter (BCM mother) Blue Copper (of course I only got one pullet from that hatch from Lil' Bill), just a hunch, but I think maybe she will end up with dark eyes too...

Yes Debbi that was the little splash cockerel that looks lavender to me....he is such a stinker (not really, he is quite friendly all of them from that hatch are) to close his eyes everytime I pick him up, it makes me crazy. One time I would like to get him with his eyes open. He has those green gray eyes, unlike Miss Trouble.

mornin' Kim!

got exciting plans for today and tomorrow?

I was just curious about what you find when you cross girls with too dark eyes to a boy with nice pumpkin eyes? do you get a pretty even mix or is it all over the map? I have a couple of girls that are just gorgeous as well that have eyes that haven't lightened up like I had thought they might when they started changing, so was just curious if you have any insights for me?

Here is a really good size comparison shot that I have not been able to get before...this is one of Bill's OE dtrs (left) and pure Davis gal (right), this is how much size Bill lends to his offspring.
The Davis girl is in with Bill, again she has too dark of eyes, but want to test her with him to see what happens.

Mornin! Happy Birthday!

Today I am going to make some cranberry something or another out of the fresh cranberries I have sitting in the fridge begging to be used up.

Finish some more baking that I didn't do yesterday. I may have to go in to town and pick up my daughter that is home from college, not sure about that yet. Tomorrow is just going to be Christmas din din with the fam., not a big function like Thanksmas, Christmas day around here is usually pretty quiet.

When I cross birds with dark eyes to Bill I get good results, I don't have a bird produced from Bill that has dark eyes yet. I am only getting the dark eyes out of the Davis birds and then it is only in the females, the males may start out dark but they turn the correct color after maturity. I also think it has to do with the melanizers as well, because the majority of my females are very over melanized. Don't know why it doesn't happen in the Bill kids.

That is a good size comparison for sure! Are both of these girls clean of the comb issues or are you still doing your rounds for testing? I really hope that girl in the back is clean and gives you some lovely offspring. She's lovely! I'll see what I might be able to pull off for the photos today. I've been up for a long time trying to get organized and such while the kiddos were still sleeping, but realized I don't know where my memory card usb port is so I can upload photos..I swear I brought it up with all my stuff, but can't locate it now. The other photos I was trying to load yesterday were from a different camera but I just don't like that it has a long delay...so I end up getting lots of shots of bums and blurs

Thank you, she is a tank. Bill's daughter is an Olive Egger so the comb issues are not a problem with her....the Davis pullet has not been tested yet. I want to see what she will produce with Bill first and then I will cross her to Gnarles' son G2 to see about the comb.

i kind of enjoy quiet christmases sometimes...but that doesn't happen with the non stop activity around here when family comes over. I hope it ends up being really relaxing for you! Oh, and thanks for the birthday wishes! I hope its gonna be a nice day!

I am hoping that crossing these girls with boys with good eye color that I'll end up in a good place. I wonder if there is a link the over melanization and eye color, because my only girls that really seem to have it are ones that have very little to no coloring.

yeah...one day down the line we will figure out a swappity swap!
