Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

5 weeks.

Watch the pullets' combs. Just saying, the ugly stuff takes longer to pop out on them. The extra points on the comb of the cockerel tends towards him being a possible carrier. Signs of the carnations show up much sooner in the males, pullets can take up to the POL until they get their true combs in. Keep a vigilant eye...just saying.

NOT an expert her but the Barring is SEX linked meaning that it is attached to the gene that makes males .... I know I am wrong on the letters but bear with me. Ok so females are x and y (female chickens determine the gender of chicks since she has both genes) and males are x and x only. SOOOOOO the barring genes are attached to the x genes and if a female is barred and the male is not barred you have sexlinked MALES only and the barring is incomplete dominate (it will show as barring with a spot BUT it will look odd not complete) If you have a Barred male x solid female HE will pass ONE copy of the barring gene to all chicks (the roos will have incomplete dominate barring and the pullets I think will be barred properly) If you breed birds with incomplete dominate barring you will not get them to breed true! You will get some that are barred and some not in either gender as sexlinked are not complete in their barring.

If you breed barred to barred you are fine all chicks will have a spot, barred to solids the offspring will not breed true some with spots some without.

Did I just confuse the issue???

No worries, Debbi! I've been on this thread long enough to watch combs!!!

And I appreciate that it can take awhile to show up. Quite frankly, I'll be thrilled if my girls show some copper!

Believe me when I say, at this point, I would rather have NAKED NECKED birds, than these stupid combs! Copper I can work on!

Absolutely not! Obviously, the ideal would be barred to barred but if one is going to go barred to solid because one has no other options - it helps to know what the result might be in advance - and what it means down the road.

I plan to put a Cuckoo Marans boy with a couple of over melanized Black Copper hens in the spring. I will make sure to share the results!

PS. The Cuckoo chicks I hatched in November were from barred to barred parents. Mine apparently are just not quite so clear on the head spots obviously. Had I had more than just 2 to compare - it might have been MUCH clearer.

If you breed the daughter back to the roos you might be ok on the barring, I would not use the roos from this mating unless I had to.... but don't forget the gold leakage thing...

I had to figure out all this the hard way

Now I have tons of useless roos, but pretty and good eats too

I don't plan to keep the second generation males and I'm QUITE ok eating useless boys!

PS. Won't it be ironic if my "Cuckoos" end up with the "copper" my Black Coppers SHOULD have!

Hey everyone.

I decided that I would put together a little list of marans breeders for 2012. If you are interested in putting your BYC name and the state you live in, and a website (if you have one

) I think it would be a great way to share your love for the breed and get to know other breeders on BYC.
