overmelanized is when a bird is too dark. For example, when a black copper or blue copper hen shows no coppering on their neck. It is because they are overmelanized.

Gold Leakage usually refers to the birchen varieties. A birchen should have silver markings regardless of whether it is a blue or a black. In some cases a male will carry one copy for silver and one copy for gold. You can tell when a bird has some gold mixed in with the silver. It is referred to as gold leakage. I can show you a pic as an example. This boy should have only silver markings.

Wow, I think I need a 500 sheet notebook and to go back to page 1!

I read through the whole thread before I posted here and it was quite a bit shorter than what it is now and I highly recommend it. People are happy to answer questions or refer you to a post place or other source of reference if available for you. After a while you will get the hang of who has what varieties and etc as well that you can direct questions at.

I have a couple, but no pics of them handy...but pretty much at an extreme they will be solid black with no copper at all...or have some copper shining through but not the nice full copper collar they are supposed to have. It is rare to find the true solid blacks, blues, or splashes with out copper background.

I will have to take a better look at my girls tomorrow and maybe take some pics

Here is another older pic of a over-melanized BCM cockeral. He sure did turn out to be a huge handsome boy. He is about 2 years old now. Too bad I don't have many overcolored girls to use him on. The only thing I hate about him is he has way too many points on his comb. I swear, I think the darker bcm roos are gorgeous

Today is sunny maybe I can get another pic of him. He is still dark but I keep him for eye candy and he is sweet.

Gold leakage can sometimes also be seen in Cuckoo x BCM offspring. The gold usually will leak in the hackles, wing bow and saddles of the males, but does not always leak in all 3 places, a person may only see it leak in the hackles. If you have a Cuckoo male crossed over a BCM female, then you get all offspring that have one copy of the cuckoo/barring gene and both genders can show leakage with the females showing it in the hackle if they have it.
