Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

overmelanized is when a bird is too dark. For example, when a black copper or blue copper hen shows no coppering on their neck. It is because they are overmelanized.

Gold Leakage usually refers to the birchen varieties. A birchen should have silver markings regardless of whether it is a blue or a black. In some cases a male will carry one copy for silver and one copy for gold. You can tell when a bird has some gold mixed in with the silver. It is referred to as gold leakage. I can show you a pic as an example. This boy should have only silver markings.

Gold leakage can sometimes also be seen in Cuckoo x BCM offspring. The gold usually will leak in the hackles, wing bow and saddles of the males, but does not always leak in all 3 places, a person may only see it leak in the hackles. If you have a Cuckoo male crossed over a BCM female, then you get all offspring that have one copy of the cuckoo/barring gene and both genders can show leakage with the females showing it in the hackle if they have it.

indeed, i hadnt thought of that one

Morning Friends!

I don't know why Zanna didn't bring that lovely girl with her when she and I met up so I could pick up those Birchen roos. I have the perfect male to put over her.....I could develop my own line of tanks with her and Bill Sr.

She is pretty isn't she....reminds me of my old girl Phat Sassy.

i should have taken a pic long ago when i grew out my first cuckoo batch i had a boy with some good leakage but he didnt last long around here

I didn't know the hens were supposed to have a gold collar. I don't think mine have any gold but will be checking shortly.

Back to the cuckoo cross....

As pink and someone else earlier said, a cuckoo too over bcm hen passes one barred gene to each offspring, so if I understand right.... they will all be barred but incomplete?

Think of a crele colored bird as a visualization, but they are not crele. A long time ago (I think it was Chasehope) posted a photo of her male cuckoo that had gold leakage, but it is waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy toooooooooooo far back in this thread for me to go looking for it.

Hmmm I think I have some key west roos that might have some of that going one...They have some crele in them as they are offspring from a gold duckwing roo and a crele hen. They are handsome little stinkpots.
