I have hatched a few Salmon Marans and they have the chipmunk pattern I have some too dark Wheatens and they hatched with a stripe down the back (faint faint) and look like Black Tailed Buff if you go to the Australian Marans web site they have chick pictures go take a look see what you think. I wouldn't cross them back to Black Coppers as they would probably hatch out looking like they have Wheaten characteristics.

The chick feather pattern looks more "Partridge" than Salmon? But I in looking at the Salmon Marans chicks they definately look like they can feather out into the Salmon. Keep us posted.

Same to you!

Had a question for you inregards to your wine-bator- where did you put vent holes and how big? We currently have 2 chicks out with 4 more working on getting out. No Marans eggs this round- none of the girls are old enough yet!

H&R~

I put 4 holes that were drilled in using a 1/2 drill bit. I open or close them using foam ear plugs. I have 2 up towards the top front that I have found I leave open. The other two are towards the bottom back..

Good Job on the hatch!

thanks sent you a PM! Boy this thread is moving fast today

we all must be having similar weather!

So, photo taking was a huge 'no go' today....the birds were having enough trouble staying upright let alone trying to look decent. All I got was ridiculous photos of blurs of feathers blowing all over the place. Even Gigantor's tail feathers are really wind blown and are bent forward over his back at the moment and the feathers are separated and etc, so, we'll see how they smooth out once the weather decides it wants to give us a break.

They are all the same boy. He has light feathering on his legs.

I am very interested in Genetics & all that good stuff. It has taken me 8 years to create the OPTIMAL lines of my BlockHead Red Golden Retrievers. Anyone can breed Goldens but not everyone can breed to a high standard. That is what I working towards with my Marans. I am new to this so I will definately stick my foot in my mouth

I have my one blue boy, and I have 2 others ~

I am raising these for dual purpose, and will cull & smoke whatever is imperfect ( I hope that doesn't make me sound mean?

) I am starting with 13 marans. I hope you all help me out when it comes to looks, confirmation, feathering & all that. Like I said I am a newbie but want to breed the best too

I thought blue X black = 50% blue and 50% black??

Oh no I have another wanna-be broody! One of the BCM girls has a broody patch and keeps trying to sit on eggs. I had to take her out of the breeding coop that we are working on and stick her back in her own coop she had a mess of eggs in there she was sitting on. I think she snuck and stayed in there last night. I hope it hurries up and freezes here and gets these silly girls out of broody-mode. Yesterday an OE girl went broody.

so I had a hard time getting this guy to stand still, and I know he lacks leg feathering but any comments would be appreciated.

I have a BCM hen with leg feathering I was thinking on breeding him to in the spring.

I'm sure at one time or another we all have put our foots in our mouths..so no worries. And no worries...I don't think making use of your birds is mean at all....dual purpose is dual purpose to me and I would much rather know where my food is coming from and use good stewardship practices when raising livestock anyday. Just my thoughts.

I'm sure if you post more photos, there are several of us that would be happy to help you look over your birds! Oh...and welcome to the thread!

you too? I have a little splash lady that is determined to defend the little nest she made to the death. Silly turd. I'll just keep taking away the eggs as I don't have her set up with the one I want to breed her to yet.
