Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

My BCMs are definitely on the shy side. VERY independent and would prefer to be left alone. In our situation, they don't always get that choice but they are DEFINITELY shy birds - and they have been that way out of the egg. Second generation (still very young), not quite as shy but they would DEFINITELY prefer to be left alone. My imported BCMs aren't proving to be any less shy. Cockerel is definitely better than the pullets (although he screams bloody murder if I actually attempt to handle him) but all of them are my least friendly.

In general, my bcm marans are less friendly than the blues, bl coppers and wheatens. My golden cuckoos are more shy than the BCMs especially the female GCs. they do not like to be picked up. I have 2 male GCs and one is real friendly and likes to be held the other is nice as long as you don't pick him up..if you do, expect to get scratched big time. He is a spaz! I think my GC are the 'wildest' of the bunch.
The birchens are the sassy and very bold. The birchens are very friendly to people but geez, do they ever HATE cats. IF any one of them sees a cat, they run up and peck it as hard as they can lol. They are also pretty mean to other birds especially the girls. They won't even take crap from girls twice thier size.

haha sounds about right with the birchens....they have a lot of attitude, but are really friendly with people indeed. Around here the ones that are the most standoffish are the cuckoos. They just seem to want to do their own thing and don't want to be bothered. Everyone else is practically asking to come hang out with me in the house cause I get followed to the house and they will hang around on the back porch for me...or come running like the world is ending when they hear the back door open.

HAHA my chickens and the two turkey girls always try to follow me into the house. One day I forgot to shut the front door and I was in the kitchen and all of a sudden I looked up and there was this huge turkey hen in there going 'chirp chirp chirp' and trying to get into the garbage can! LOL AND you know who was behind her...

haha I'm gonna guess Sassy was right there ready to jump in on the action too! Lately the birds have been hanging out under the bay window in the dining room...I think they can hear people talkin in there and hope that someone will com visit them haha

Yep who else lol. She still thinks she's a turkey gangsta girl. Maybe since she hangs with them, that's why those silly turkey hens like blue copper marans boys!! I'm suprised they don't like the birchen boy maybe they think he is too young yet. They sure do try to make up to the bl copper roosters though. They want nothing to do with this one BCM boy who tries to mate them lol. I really need to get a Tom turkey.
Pretty soon your chickens will be up in the bay window spying on you lol.

Welcome Samantha!

Got any pics?? We love pics here! If you are just after the darkest of eggs, I would say go ahead and breed them together and see what you get. I would breed the girls back to the original roo. Breeding siblings can bring forth many qualities very quickly, but it will also bring the faults to the forefront quickly as well. Roos do contribute to the egg color, so breed your darkest egged roo to your girls. Linebreeding, father to daughters, or mother to sons, grandfathers to grandaughters, etc. can go on for a long time without detriment. That said, this would also help in the conformational aspect of breeding, if you took into play their conformation and color, and breed away from faults. If you don't care what they look like, breed the darkest egg layers to the darkest egged roos. Others will chime in here that have more experience than me!

Wow, that would be cool! Can chickens and turkeys cross sucessfully?? I know there are Guinea x chicken crosses, and Pheasant x chicken crosses. Are there actual real Turkens??

haha they could too since the picnic table is right there!

Since I put the Priority box under my picture window on the front porch, I have been blessed with two girls using it daily! Talk about recycling your cardboard!

I used to have two bottle baby calves that I would let free range in the yard to help with grass mowing. Forgot to put them in their pen one night, and while watching TV, I happened to look at the window, to see 4 red eyeballs staring at me!!!

Once I got my heart out of my throat, I realized it was the calves, watching the TV through the window! I use the term "calves" here loosely, they weighed around 500# at the time! They were there every night watching the TV with me...until their time was up.

that's AWESOME!! I want cows so bad, but can't til I get more space. I've found land I really like but am gonna hold off to see how the price sets...most people around here are wanting tilled land ready to go...even for building. I want native grasses and thats what this place is. it also has all the hookups and a well, a workshop, and a cement pad down for building already. I just gotta be patient a while longer

X2!! OMG that's so funny Debbie. I would freak out. I don't know what's worse turkeys in the kitchen or peeking Tom cows spying in the windows LOL! They must of liked television.

I want a little (okay not so little) jersey cow in the worst way! I can't wait to get more land so I can get one. Then of course, she would need a friend muuhahaha.

This reminds me yesterday I was outside and heard the turkey hen going 'chirp chirp chirp' and went over to the guinea pen and there was the turkey standing in front of the guineas mirror (guineas love mirrors) admiring herself in the mirror and chirping, then she squatted down and was making her purring noises LOL. What's wrong with these crazy animals lately? It must be the off weather patterns this winter..its like all the birds think its spring already. Going broody, roosters fighting all over the place, now turkeys making out with themselves in the mirror arrrgg.
