Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hello all! I finally got a Marans and she layed her first egg last week, this gorgeous chocolate that I have been waiting for. I was researching the breed, specifically about that dark brown egg, and found this link that I wanted to share, it's so interesting. Enjoy!

Ok...I did what I could to get photos today. I was limited to only the pens that are protected from the wind and didn't have the best lighting, so these are just a few of my girls and a boy or two. I am going to precursor these photos by saying my favorite girls do tend to have darker eyes...so, this is something i am definitely going to be working on this breeding season for sure. I just can't pass up the butterball bodies on these girls tho.

This pen is made up of birds that are 6 months or younger. The first pic is one of my favorite Birchens, he is still working on losing his tail with his first juvie molt and has a shorter back, but I have some birchen stock with overly long backs, so I'm happy. I also do have two other boys with longer backs, so they will help to balance each other out.



The next are some girls from this same age range pen.
I'm pretty sure this splash girl is a splash birchen...I'm soooo excited to pair her up with some of my birchen boys for test mating!

This girl is a super dark blue and is just beautiful!

What a beautiful egg! I am so jealous! My oldest marans pullet is 16 weeks old. Sigh...

Count me in the jealous group too. I still have another 3-4 months to wait until my girls start laying. One good thing today was that one of my pure Ameraucanas laid her first egg. The down side was my main EE stopped, so I didn't gain any ground on the egg production.

Gilavina, those are some pretty girls and if you show too many of those boys I'll be having to hunt some Birchen down for my pen.

Thanks....I do love my birds....they aren't perfect, but the Marans are a project I'm dedicated to, no matter the color and am willing to put in whatever amount of time I have to. Those birchens are addicting...

I almost don't want to say this on here, but I collected 21 eggs today...just in the Marans

Ok...this pen is made up of girls that are between a year and a year and a half old. I am going to have to stop saying the phrase, "this is one of my favorites" cause I love them all.

Some of these girls are still growing in their feathers from molting, so excuse their slightly frazzled look

This first girl is a blue birchen. She is still getting her feathering in and is just starting to get the birchen part back. She is my tank of the blues.

A BCM girl of mine that shows not Copper, but throws nice offspring.

The BCM boy in this pic is my smaller boy. He's my back up and is super sweet and always hides behind the ladies. This is one of the only pics of him I have! He has a nice color too...its a bit washed out since I was using a flash, but overall both him and Gigantor have nice coloring. (they are not related)

I think I will just stick with the Black and Blue Coppers... They are pretty though.... but I am too new to all this to take that project on. I am just going to get me some Silver Penciled Rocks.... I hope they don't have as far to go as the Marans. Vicki when you get them perfect you can send me some eggs and I will just breed from your perfection.
