Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Yes - thanks!

Only mine seem to have more tail -is that b/c mine need more body or yours are still growing their tails back? (is this a totally DUMB question?)

What I mean is, most of yours seem to have a cute little tail with the "top" two feathers a little longer - and I DO have 2 or 3 with a tail like that.

BUT - I also have some that have a tail that looks more spread from the side view...let me see if I can find a pic...which is definitely not as pretty. My notes say you said she was "not too bad"!

haha....yeah. I have a few girls with tails like that, and while I will use them for breeding, I will select offspring that tend towards the tails like the ones I posted before. For me I feel like it gives an overall more balanced look when the girls are as tanky as the ones I like haha Hope that makes sense. I would not have a problem with using her for a breeder, hence the 'not too bad' comment. I probably should be more specific when I make comments eh?

That makes sense!

Off to check out my photos and compare!

Does anyone know how to superimpose a photo over a photo??

Vicki, Love that last girl's color, but I think I would test mate her first, as it does look like a Carnation potential. Do all of your hens have dark eyes??
Hey Debbi! I totally missed your post. I'll see if I can snatch up that girl and get a pic for you....I'm pretty sure what I did when I was trying to help her is to ruin the points on her comb...she has just bumps where there should be points and then the back of the comb like normal. She had a full scab on her comb for over a month when she was little and for the longest time was just a totally flat spot on her head, no bumps to speak of at all. I'll try tomorrow if the weather behaves and she behaves too....she is super shy...hence why she is with the sussex. Not all my girls have dark eyes, just most of the ones I took pics of today. These are the ones I'm going to be working with the most this breeding season, to see if i can get some better eye color on this group of girls. I'll get more pics of other girls. I know they are not perfect and have work to do, but that's what I'm working on and feel comfortable going slow and steady improving them. As I mentioned, I will be thoroughly test mating every bird I have.
Its hard when i'm not home much during the light hours of the day right now. Or...worse, when I get home and have to sit to rest my back from a long day at work. I can't wait til this back crap is all over.

Right now, all I can claim for sure, is mostly orange eyes, and white toenails! The rest is iffy at best!

I like the new format!!! easy to do the smileys...Just have to get used to it...

We also need the S emoticon because at the NEPC show this weekend there were alot of Maran entered.
I didn't want to get myself into any more trouble, so I didn't correct them!
Still trying to figure out how to post a friends pic of Clyde.
He got beat up pretty bad when we got home, I am hoping no real damage. He slept on the sofa last night.
But he is crowing at 4 am, so i guess he feels better.

Good morning! Can't believe I'm awake this early. Dogs got to barking at the pens around 3:45 and I heard my wife yelling at them to stop. They did, but I never went back to sleep. Looks like it's gonna be a long day.

Stoo~ Hope Clyde is okay.

He looks, well, SOUNDS better. At least I know he's gonna live. But looks really bad.
After he heals up I'll give him a bath to get the blood off him. Poor baby!
