Ha ha...nope, no the odd man out...I think its a she and she has no problem asserting herself. LOL!

I think...and I repeat, I think, there is only one male in this group, but the next couple of days will tell me fo sure.

Thanks! It's been a while since I got more than 1 Splash in a hatch....can't wait for the next hatch this coming Sunday. Hoping for more Splash!!!!

haha I didn't even really notice I typed he...must just be force of habit to assign a gender or something. That would be fantastic to have mostly all pullets!

Thanks Raven. I looooooove them! They are so sweet I just want to snuggle them until they pooh on me and then that's enough until the next time.

I hope I get those pullet eggs LOL! and Splash too.... I need a few splashes. When you are done testing I can put them with my BCM roo. They are cute!

Oh yes...quite a few actually and let me say this, the males are the ones you are usually going to see the copper on. I have only seen or been able to produce one Splash Copper female that has ever had copper show through on her and it was only one feather. I find it very hard to get the copper on the females, I think others do as well, but boy howdy give us a male and we can get copper on them.

Here is a male I had about 3 years ago, his name was Lincoln.



I should have kept him (he hatched from a very nice egg), but I kept his brother instead who was a beautiful Blue Copper that I used in the breeding pen for 2.5 years. Then silly me, I introduced some new birds from Florida that when crossed with my Blue Copper roo ending up producing carnation combs. Still test mating to see if I have eliminated it, but had to remove the Blue Copper from the program and all of the birds that I had shipped in from Florida. Sad I tell ya...and a long story.

I say if anyone ever sees a carnation comb in their flocks or their birds.....CULL the bird showing the fault and test mate, test mate, test mate everyone else to see who is a carrier and CULL. These combs are very hard to breed out and find the culprits...I have first hand knowledge and it's very disheartning.

Just in case anyone has missed these photos or discussions in the past 200 pages or so...and because we have lots of new folks joining the thread, I thought I would post these photos again just so that folks can familiarize themselves with what to look for as far as the carnation comb (or as I call them....side sprigs).
It can be seen as early as 3 weeks of age on the males and usually can't be seen on the females until they reach point of lay.

Thanks Pink that was extremely helpful. I have missed a lot but glad to be back. I'm not sure how long I'm back since it will soon be time to plant gardens and hatch and ship chicks and I'm still training and working with the 16 wild horses so my days will be packed full again when the daily rain downpours stop and the sun comes out and the days are longer. It's been a crazy winter here - no freezing weather but lots of rain.

Ruth, the boy in my avatar is a splash copper, he doesn't have solid copper markings, but a decent amount. I will be using him this spring for the first time in breeding pens, so it should be interesting to see what he throws.

Kim, how are those babies doin?! Sounds like they were hatching right along as of yesterday.

He's a nice looking boy too. So I'm guessing there's no one defined "look" for a splash copper. Are any of the Marans clubs working on a SOP for them? As I said, I've really been out of the loop and haven't talked or read about chickens all year.
