My chickens like to eat the chocolate mint. Maybe it freshens their breath HAHA.

I have all kinds of feed ideas, but nothing seems easy.... but sprouting things like that seem easy. Were do I get oats to sprout? Sunflowers... I will grow that and corn (for us mostly) and tomatoes too. I so need to start those seeds. They are heirlooms from last years hand full of tomatoes we got. Looking for duck weed to grow for them. Anybody want to send me a gallon bag of your pond weeds

I really want to supplement with greens as much as I can since mine don't get to free range.

I sold 1 hen and 3 pullets yesterday and 2 non breeding Marans today.

Finally they are paying for feed.... now if they could just pay me for the BACK feed

good job on the sale!

I just get a bag of oats and off I go...just stick some seeds in the tray, add a little water. No problem! I just grow them right along with my other seedlings.

If I remember correctly, this Silver Marans is just a regular cuckoo Marans with a double dose of silver. There is a study on them at an English website which has the word "Art" in it. They have been breeding hem for years,

I've done it and they LOOOOOVE it! The other thing you can do and they grow super fast is oat sprouts.

I need some tips on sprouting oats. I thought it would be easy. I used a lettuce container with a strainer fit into a matching bowl. I rinsed the oats every day, keeping them moist. When I saw evidence of mold, I tossed it. Wrong oats? Wrong technique?

I just put a thin layer of oat on a sheet and put water in...just enough to get them wet, then left light on them 24 hours a day til they started sprouting and viola! Occasionally you will get a spot that has a light mold to it...I just take a plastic spoon and take out that part, but really they come up super fast!

Are you just using the oat at the grocery store cereal section? That hasn't been cooked in some way to kill the seed part? Can't use the quick oats right, just rolled oats?

no...I'm using whole oats from the feed store for sprouting.

I was just thinking the same thing today.... REALLY!

What am I going to do? Dh and I spent all year building brooders and coops!
We just finished the last coop last week AND we will be working on the LAST brooder this weekend.

I narrowed down my breeds to .... BCM, Delawares, and Speckled Sussex. I have the original hens from the first season - comet, white leghorn, EE, partridge rocks, etc. NOW, I am making plans to get some buff leghorns and the exchequer leghorns are calling my name too!

God had better help me be strong before DH disowns me....
