Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Vicki~ I am sure those eggies will be fine....they are very forgiving at this stage of the game. My bator dropped down to 72 degrees on the last power outage during lockdownn and I had a great hatch. I didn't even bother to get up out of bed to cover the thing or move it into the living room next to the woodstove. Holding out hope for you!

Ohhhhhh...wanted to say that I am trading 6 Black Copper hens for 2 Nigerian Dwarf does on Saturday...possibly bred. One girl is 1 year old and the other is 2 years old. I can't wait to get the little cuties here! What a great trade! Get to get rid of the rest of the Black Coppers from Florida and a couple of BCM's from the laying flock...the gal that is getting them is only going to use them for layers.
Can't wait to get my new little goaties!

Oh and Vicki~ You should pop on over to the Barnevelder thread and see my new Splash Blue Laced Red Wyandotte boy!!!!!!

hahha....I'm so glad I'm not alone! I mean, its just a toad....but when its like 4 times the size of any other large toad you've seen..and it comes launching at your face...it can make you freak out!! I love the "Debbi, come to the light." I can just picture it!!!

When I was pregnant that was what my husband would say to the baby "Come to the light"

Oh, don't you just love those surprise toads!!? After I had lived in this house for a couple of years, the main water line coming into the house sprung a leak. I convinced myself, I could fix that! Now mind you, the crawl space under the house is probably 18-20" tall at the biggest end, and extremely dark. So, I called my friend to come over and hold a trouble light for me, that was lowered down through a hole I made in the bathroom floor. I took a couple of belts of Bourban to help summon up some courage, and slithered into the crawl space. Although it was only about 12 feet in, crawling on my belly was not my forte, and it took me some time to find the leak. Great, I find the leak, and the water is spewing out of the ground, so I start digging with my trowel to get to the pipe. Flo is standing in the bathroom shouting down, "everything ok? Did you find it?" Yes, digging now, think I just hit the pipe....AAAAAHHHHHHHHHH EEEEEEEEE AAAHAHAHHAHAHA!!! THUD! "what, what, what is wrong??" "Debbi, go to the light, come to the light! Oh please don't make me go into that hole!!" She was beside herself with fear. I dug down to a huge toad, and like you said, it jumped directly at my face, mud flying, and as I reared back to escape it, I whacked my head on one of the floor beams, and I mean HARD! I think I blacked out for a few seconds, and awoke to her saying come to the light!

Seems to me, I got out of the crawl space a whole bunch quicker than I got in there, and backwards to boot!!! Oh heck no! I'm calling a plumber! To this day, they don't make enough Bourban in the whole state of Kentucky to EVER get me back down there again!! Flo, was very relieved I got out safely, albeit with a huge knot on the top of my head....and that she didn't have to come in after me! Dad gummed toads!

I am MIGHTILY impressed, Debbi! NO amount of money and I do mean NO amount, not even one of my chickens in distress, could convince me to get into such a crawl space. I suffer from claustrophobia. Wide open spaces suit me JUST fine.

Don't stress, what will be, will be. I had a very poor hatch with my Silkie eggs. Power went out here too, and I only ended up with 4 chicks! Power went out here Sat. and yesterday for about 2 hours, for no apparent reason. Chicks in the brooder weren't thrilled, but I covered up their brooder and they were in the sunlight coming in the window, so they fared ok. At least I didn't have any in the bator...

I'm really trying not to stress...just think its cause the eggs are out of my "sweet boys"!

Vicki~ I remember that cute little pullet! She's a sweetie! I am keeping my fingers crossed for you on these Silvers!

Debbi~ Glad you are okay!

Question~

What kind of Marans is this?
His under color is not a smokey blackish brown...it is blue/slateish color....it is in his tail and on his wings around the wing triangle and also on his shank feathering. He hatched out a yellow chick, also hatched out from the same eggs I had the funky chicks hatch from, it's just that he hatched at my best friends house.

I'd guess a mix based on the leg color...but if I had to put in a second guess...blue tailed buff. I've hatched those out before too! what the heck is going on??? They were from some marans girls I bought and tossed their eggs in the incubator for kicks to see if the person I bought them from had them in with a boy...and out they popped. Only the girls were this color tho...all the boys came out white with dark accent colors....odd.

I really hope they will be forgiving....I'm so ready to meet those little wee fuzzies developing!

OHHHHH!!!! Imma gonna need some pics of those new goaties!!! I can't wait, I'm so excited for you! I might have babies come May if Ina is bred....I feel like a little kid!

I'm on my way over to the thread now!

sorry Kim...I got distracted over there for a while. He's not too bad lookin....I just can't wait to see what you get going for your project this year. I love the Barnies, but just don't have any room for more breeds at the moment. I can't wait to see what you've done with the blue barnie project tho....when I get more room, I would make room for some like them!

There was a correction posted on the MCCU group that someone had misspoke about the Silver Wheatens....I looked through the albums on there but didn't find them. Now that I have internet back again I might have to see if I can go back and look again later when I get off work. This boy came out of my cuckoo Claude and one of my birchen girls. I have a couple of sports in with the birchens I kept because they were stunning to me and its possible that they might also be the hen used. I don't see wheaten either...

=====================
I was sure these double silver marans were cuckoos. several years back a breeder in OK was working on creating a line of the. Her on-line name was Okie..(something). Not OKcarla. I think the info was on the old marans breeders of america Yahoo list owned by Ron Presley. Anyone got access to that list's archive? I remember she was going to name them Platinum Cuckoos.
Best,
karen
