Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

So sorry to hear your Mother is in the hospital but glad she went! Hope you get her home soon.
Sorry about your Irish Setter too! Your avatar always makes me smile I know how much that hurts to lose your girl but sometimes the only thing you can do is let them go.
Your Splash girls are so pretty I just love the Splashes!
thanks, it's just been crazy but that is life. We still have 1 dog so that helps make it a bit easier but we have to help her adjust too. The kids are already asking about adding another dog- told them that they had to ask their dad! We are very thankful that my mom went(my dad took her) as it could have been a whole lot worse.

These 2 splash girls have spots- makes me think of dalmation pups! They are also a talkative 2!

Have to check with my friend that took 5 Cuckoo eggs for under her broody and see how it is going- any that hatch she will give back!

Glad you have all survived the night--just heard some areas had casualties. Sad. Prayers for those yet to deal with the bad weather.

We are getting snow-rain-snow and the forecasting is constant. DH has opted to stay at work tonight and not travel home as a the storm hits during rush hour. He'll be fielding calls all night anyway ! ANd I'll man the farm--nothing's changed in 20 years!

They made it through Honolulu! It says processed through Honolulu at 11:00pm. I sure hope that means they left Honolulu and are heading to my island. I know they gotta be at that airport 1 1/2 hours from me real soon or they will not make it onto the truck that brings them out to me. There is only one delivery a day. Whew so glad they are in Hawaii at least!
All that tornado talk I was sure my chicks got swooped up into one. lol!!

These storms don't scare me as bad during the day... it is the ones at NIGHT that worry me. Those are the real killers. We have sirens near out house, but not at the farm.

The last bad storm I was caught in, my mother called me and told me they had tornadoes on the radar right were I was driving. So I turned on the radio and the weather lady said, the rain will be side ways and you will NEVER SEE IT COMING. SHE WAS RIGHT! I could not see anything. I was kinda paniced and in a car on the road no where to go. It slowed down and I figured the best I could do was just go and try to stay out of the way. When I got to the farm 3 miles away HUGE trees were down in our drive and I could not even get to the barn. Called hubby and he came to the front drive and told me about the other trees that were down. It was bad. That kinda thing happened ALL over the area. I can't remember if they said it was really tornadoes but it was a mess. Traffic jams like I have never seen. Huge trees down at the Hermitage laying in the road, was sad really. Takes a long time for things to look normal after a tornado kinda naked really.

It has been maybe 12-15 years since the tornado hit down town Nashville and East Nashville and still areas just don't look right. You could probably fly over and still see the path of the tornado.

You don't have tornadoes there do you? It is a give and take no matter where you live. Earthquakes in CA, Volcanoes and Tsunamis in Hawaii and hurricanes too. We will get the BIG Earthquake one day, but all in all it is good here.

Your babies are going to want to eat! and drink! Good luck.... baby pictures are required!

Christie~ That's AWESOME NEWS! I am sending out tons and tons of happy healthy chicks vibes to your chickies!

Hens~ Love the Splash chookers! How old are they now?

Donna~ The white face and dark face in my experience have been interesting....I mostly deal with the dark faces as my birds carry tons of extra melanizers and are usually very dark, but I find the dark turns to red upon maturity, but the pullets will hang on to the dark right up until the time they reach POL. I don't notice too many of the males being the dark faces....I notice they are usually the ones with the lighter pale skin and they too tend to turn normal colored the older they get. When I first saw a pale faced bird I thought they were ill. LOL!

I have one that is BLACK all over her face... need to check her comb and see if it is black or red. She is laying and still very dark. The light one just don't LOOK right to me... I like the med, not too dark and not too light... just right

they are around 3.5 months old now so a couple more months before eggs

8 eggs set for hatch today and I have 5 pips (1 is completely zipped and getting ready to pop) and tons of busy peep peeping going on!

One of the eggs I set is one of those lovely lavender colored heavily coated chaulky looking eggs. They are the hardest to get to hatch. I so hope it pips soon. I candled it yesterday morning and I saw movement and what looks like an internal pip. Fingers are crossed bigtime for this one!
